Editorial Reviews

Review

... informative and thought-provoking...useful as an outline of EU history and institutions...I recommend the collection because the essays are accessible, informative and useful for thinking about feminist sexual politics in relation to the EU. The case studies would be worthwhile reading in womens studies courses comparing national differences in attitudes and policies toward sexual politics. The data the authors synthesize is helpful for thinking about the limits and the possibilities of using trans-national political entities like the EU to address sexual political issues and the relationship between national and international feminism in Europe. -- H Net Reviews

Just as feminist scholars began to develop an analysis of "the state" and women in Europe gained access to its political, legal and bureaucratic arenas, increased attention and reliance on European institutions have begun to take precedence over the more parochial concerns of the nation state. With the creation of the European super-state, feminist scholars will have to enhance their understanding of the European Union (EU) while activists will increasingly focus their efforts upon its institutions. Sexual Politics And The European Union: The New Feminist Challenge provides a comprehensive examination of EU policy implications for some of the most burning issues concerning women. This is the first book to transcend the emphasis on economics, the conventional basis for EU public policy discussions, thus providing a basis upon which one can begin to assess the politics of European integration from a feminist perspective. -- Midwest Book Review

Rich detailed overviews...combine with articles focusing on a specific country...Certain characteristics of the EU womens policy recur in the collection. These include, firstly, the maintenance of the public/private divide by the economic focus of the EU. So, for example, sexual harassment is only defined as taking place in the workplace. Secondly, the category women in the EU policy ignores differences between them and disadvantages, in particular, women form ethnic minorities. In contrast, the contributors strive to identify the commonalties of the womens position in relation to the EU, whilst at the same time stressing their very different situations. Themes such as equal treatment, citizenship and human rights, redefined form a feminist perspective, lend coherence to a collection of informative, detailed and well argued analyses -- Journal of Area Studies
