I have become familiar with taoist sexual practises through the books "The Tao of Love and Sex" and "The Tao of the Loving couple" by Jolan Chang. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rejuvenation through sexual energy, September 18, 2001
This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
As a practitioner of sexual transformative practices from other traditions, I was curious about the similarities and differences so I couldn't put the book down until I finished reading it - and this book is very easy to read.
The book is divided in three parts. First part deals with the Origins and Sexual Philosophy of the White Tigress as well as Taoist Alchemical Correlations. The second part describes the Sexual Triad - The White Tigress, The Green Dragon and The Jade Dragon. Part three describes the Restoration (rejuvenation) Methods of the Tigress as well as The Transformation Techniques.
Some of the exercises are practiced without the partner (such as exercises for restoring and enlarging the breasts and for slimming the waist line), while other exercises require the partner (the focus of these exercises is on oral stimulation and absorption of the male sexual energy for the purpose of rejuvenation).
I should point out that not all of the practices are suitable for every woman, however every woman could pick out the exercises that she feels comfortable with and experience the increased vitality, youthfulness, self-confidence and intensified sexual enjoyment.
I would also recommend the book Healing Love Through Tao: Cultivating Female Sexual Energy by Mantak and Maneewan Chia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexuality for spirituality, January 7, 2006

This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
The White Tigress practice is the woman's side of men's Jade Dragon: similar in ways, complementary in others. This book (written by a man) describes the early stages of White Tigress training. The goal of that training is to heighten a woman's sexual awareness and power, partly for health and long life, but also to direct that power towards enlightenment.

Because of the secrecy of the teachings, Hsi describes only the first third of White Tigress training. That includes yogic exercises and self-massage, but centers heavily on fellation as a way to focus attention and to collect the male energy for the woman's betterment. Unlike other authors, Hsi generally identifies this as harmless or beneficial to the male partner, when done properly. Hsi discusses how older texts could have created incorrect impressions. Sometimes, though, he presents interpretations that echo feminist rewritings of Western history and tradition. This alternative view interests me, but its differences from more widely held interpretations interfere with easy acceptance.

White Tigress practice is based on the theories of traditional Chinese medicine. Hsi aligns many of these beliefs with Western scientific knowledge. As I've found elsewhere, the spiritual beliefs of scientists generally show better understanding than the scientific beliefs of mystics. This applies especially to Hsi's claims about the relative immunity of White Tigresses to STDs - I encourage any serious reader to treat Hsi's discussion with caution.

Although sexually oriented and often dependent on male partners, this is not about relationships other than ones that further her development. White Tigress teaching is based wholly on its benefit to the woman who practices it. It's not a predatory practice, though. Strengthening her "Jade Dragon" strengthens her, and Hsi makes clear that gentleness and joy are basic rules as well as outcomes.

That is the real goal of White Tigress teaching: joy. The Tigress is happy in herself. The practice is said to strengthen her body so that she remains happy long after others start to suffer from the failures of age. Once her training is complete, the Tigress is free to join the world, not just as Tigress teacher, but as mother, professional, or whatever she wants, bringing her joy with her. I value the happiness of the women in my life - it must be a wonderful honor to meet a Tigress who has so much happiness in her.

2.0 out of 5 stars Love forbidden?, April 16, 2005
This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
I have become familiar with taoist sexual practises through the books "The Tao of Love and Sex" and "The Tao of the Loving couple" by Jolan Chang. But, as you can tell from the title already, for Jolan Chang taoism means experiencing an hour lasting bliss while being united with a *beloved* partner, whereas Hsi Lai teaches women to consider men as something like "walking gas pumps" their penisses being the "nozzles".

Women are taught to seduce men (which are called "green dragons") to perform oral (and, with few exceptions, *only* oral) sex on them in order to tap yang energy off them, which, after the women has aggregated enough yang energy, is supposed to rejuvenile her and sort of even carry her up to heaven.
"Normal" sexual intercourse on the other hand, according to Hsi Lai, is supposed to be allegedly too much of a strain for the female organism. But isn't the vagina by nature designated for sexuality even more than the mouth? Can a woman be sexually satisfied without having the vagina involved?

And, what I found most disconcerting: Any kind of romantic feelings, let alone love, between the "white tigresses" (the women) and the "green dragons" (the men) is explicitly forbidden.
Once the man has served his pupose of providing the woman with yang energy, he is simply discarded.

How different are Jolan Chang's books on this subject, how much more poetry, sensitiveness and above all LOVE they contain.

Just find out for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars In consideration of Taoist Tradition ..., July 11, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
This book is a very traditional look into what some might consider "odd" practices. If you are acquianted with the Tao, you might enjoy this book. It is a very unique look into "use" of the three treasures. Generally speaking these treasures are to be kept safe, so "using" them is part of the reason why people have trouble with this book.

If you want a look into the last dynasty in China, with respect to a very unique Taoist tradition, give this book a try. It's not completely functional, but if you have an open mind you will get a lot from Hsi Lai's work. I have quite enjoyed his teachings from Madamme Lin, however they are not for the uninitiated.

In response to the previous reviewer I would suggest that they look into the traditions of the Tao in it's entirety, before making comments about this book. Jolan Chang is a wonderful addition to any library on the Tao, but his writings are very, very contemporary. Again this is not a negative slight on his work, it's great, but it is not tremendously traditional from the standpoint of Taoist theory.

All in all this is a good book, though I find Mantak Chia's work to be the most functional for the average person. The MultiOrgasmic Couple is wonderful if you're not up for something as esoteric as this piece.

Yours,

David Hastings Lloyd

5.0 out of 5 stars Dare to Open Your Horizons, July 8, 2007
This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
Life and sex are complicated. We tend to put labels on things and people so we don't have to think or question.
Understanding the many dimensions of the White Tigress is not for those who already have preconceived ideas about women and their sexuality. However, if you are open to expanding your world and becoming more through taoist teachings, you will be engrossed and amazed at the teachings of the White Tigress. Hsi Lai helps us to enter her world and offers us the opportunity to also achieve immortality, joy, sexual pleasure and youth.
The secret to the fountain of youth will ALWAYS be our capacity to go into the unknown, be curious, and open to new ideas.

This book SHOULD be called "The Untold Story of the White Tigress."

If this group actually exists, this book is an interesting tale of their life and their beliefs.

As far as teachings...if you would like to know how to stretch or rejuvenate (take care of) your body like a tigress--you have 40 pages. Sexual teachings are very few and are at the last 30 pages of the 260 page book.

I assume the publisher added the "Sexual Teachings of" part of the title in order to sell more books. If the title was the author's description of this book, I would argue the rest of his works must be as blatantly misrepresented as this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars New Age not Academic, November 5, 2007
This review is from: The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress: Secrets of the (Paperback)
There is a fine line between new age thinking and academic information. I am one who enjoys a balanced mix of both. This book however tends to be on the new age side of things. While it does incorporate ancient bits of text, it interprets them in such a way that I feel it lacks legitimacy. Don't get me wrong, there are some interesting philosophies within the pages but over all, I was disappointed. Check out "The Art of the Bedchamber" by Douglas Wile instead.
