5.0 out of 5 stars Originality still reigns supreme!!!!
WOW! This is the best 2SJ record yet. Finally they are free from the prison of record labels and radio stations. I'm not surprised that I didn't hear any of these tracks on the radio. They didn't have a label paying off the radio jocks this time! For those who have watched the J's progression, Sexy Karate makes sense. Little by little they have developed from a jokester...

3.0 out of 5 stars Loyal J's Fan Steps on the soapbox
I've been listening to the J's for a few years now and my rating of 3 stars for this album is relative to their other albums. Since the SuperMercado days we've been seeing a steady decline in the wit content in their albums, as well as a marked increase in their attemps to market their songs to a more brain-dead Top 40 audience. Amidst rumours of the band breaking up...

Little by little they have developed from a jokester party band to innovative and original music pioneers. The closest band that they resemble, is the Beastie Boys who started with "License to Ill" and ended up with "Hello Nasty". I bet a lot of people who were introduced to the band through their radio singles will not be into this record. Good. Let the people with taste buds for something different sample the aural delights that this band serves up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album from the J's, April 9, 2003

2 Skinnee J's is one of those bands that are hard to classify, and that's a big part of their appeal. A mix of hip-hop, rap, rock, their music belongs in a category all its own, and if you liked the J's other albums, you'll enjoy this one too. If you've never heard 2 Skinnee J's, well, it's hard to find anyone else to compare them with. Check them out!

I think this is the smoothest sounding J's cd yet. It's solid all the way through, whether they're rockin' and rhymin' fast with "i can't hear you"; or slowing it down some with "inside my room"; or even spending some time to bust out political messages in "who wants this?". And in every song, the J's mix it up with their typical creative lyrics. In fact, that's probably the biggest disappointment of the cd: no words of the lyrics are included.

While "Sexy Karate" may not have the manic energy of "Super Mercado", there is still plenty to enjoy, and you have to enjoy any band that is as original as 2 Skinnee J's. On their last cd, "Volumizer", some fans complained about songs along the lines of "Lemon Drop" and "Grown Up", but I don't think those fans will have anything to complain about this time. Solid J's all the way through.

This is the kind of band you'd like to see last forever. But like they say, I guess, all good things...

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 Skinnee J's Do it again!!!, April 9, 2003
This review is from: Sexy Karate (Audio CD)
2 Skinnee Js have done it again. Sexy Karate is another work of art. They are one of the best live bands in the World today in my own opinion. Sadly, they will be going their seperate ways this summer so make sure you see them live soon. This album is just brilliant as is their other albums. I personally recomend Deal of the Century and Who Wants This? as the best songs on the album. There is not a bad song on this Album, just like with their other two full albums. I recommend this highly and I will play this CD and remain a dedicated J's fan until the day I die.

Since the SuperMercado days we've been seeing a steady decline in the wit content in their albums, as well as a marked increase in their attemps to market their songs to a more brain-dead Top 40 audience. Amidst rumours of the band breaking up this summer this album seems like a last ditch effort to make their sound more appealing to the masses -- at the cost of the wit and sound that I think makes them (or made them) so unique. Don't get me wrong, in contrast to a lot of the other radio fodder out there this album is worth listening to. For any potential new J's fans I would advise getting SuperMercado before delving into some of their later works. J's still kick it as a whole!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Live, December 14, 2003
This review is from: Sexy Karate (Audio CD)
The 2Skinnee J's Music always comes off better live than it does on plastic. From way back in the day, when all you could have was sing earthboy sing and bootlegs, to the newest collection of material in order to know the intensive electrifying presence of those deemed 2 skinnee, you must see them live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Knock It!!!, August 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sexy Karate (Audio CD)
I've heard a few people knock this CD, saying that the J's didn't make as good a CD as their previous 2. I personally think this is fantastic. Being that last J's cd, I think their idea for this CD was to make one w/ the music they wanted to play. This CD got very little radio play, because it seems it wasn't aimed at appealing to the masses, instead it was a CD of fantastic J's music for J's fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great CD, but not as good as either of the previous., May 28, 2003

After listening to the album repeatedly for a number of weeks, I decided that I loved the songs on the album as separate entities, but for some reason I didn't feel like the CD as a whole was all that good. I tried changing the order to see if that fixed it, which it did a little bit, but eventually I figured it out. SuperMercado had Riot Nrrrd, Volumizer had Grown Up. Both of those songs (although I don't think Grown Up is anything close to the best song on Volumizer) were singles that got some airplay. Sexy Karate doesn't have a single to give it an air of legitimacy. We Can't Hear You and One Summer have received (very) minimal airplay, but frankly, they shouldn't ever have been offered as singles. Get in the Van and Next Big Thing are the best two songs on the CD, and the two that were offered for radio listeners aren't even close to those two. The CD doesn't hit the same ruts that Volumizer does, and because of that I gave it the same rating that I gave Volumizer, but I feel like the progression is clear. SuperMercado was incredible, Volumizer was great, but not AS great, and Sexy Karate is merely very good...which I think has to be a credit to the J's. I can only hope that this is not, in fact, their final album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Beat Evangelists Strike Again..., April 9, 2003
By
"famos_amos" (New Haven, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sexy Karate (Audio CD)
The 2 Skinnee J's...how do you describe a band that invents a genre that so neatly fits smack dab between countless re-inventions of oldschool genres, but creates a sound so driving and uniqe that it begs to be its own category? This album (their third full album release) is entirely recorded and prodced by the band themselves, so there is guaranteed not to be any "sell out" songs on it. The J's are the their usual eclectic selves. The old Skinnee crew stays true to their self-proclaimed title of the Big Beat Evangelists, with the majority of the tracks on this cd having such an open, bob-your-head, driving sound that you'll wonder how something as 2-dimensional as a cd can hold such a fat sound. Get In the Van (track1) begins with a sample of a triad of bass-guitar notes repeated within what quickly develops into a surprisingly compicated, yet easy-to-understand drumbeat...and the lyrics sneak in at the last moment bringing the whole song to a finale that, instead of ending, simply gets better as it continues. On deck for track 2 comes an amazing commentary on their attitudes and experiences making music for the past 11+ years, supported by yet another mammoth-sounding, though sparse, beat. One Summer (#3) calls to mind sweaty, sunny, chill days spent wandering the streets of Manhattan...but never fear 'cause the J's have "Got the Gatorade for your thirsty minds."
I cannot go through each song on this album. They're too good to compress to a few sentences each, or even a single listening. Grab this up, listen straight through, and it should knock you down like a sack of intellectually-charged bricks fired fired from your speakers. If it doesn't, check your pulse and learn the lyrics...they're amazingly well arranged, have quite a bit of humor, and discuss issues that actually need talking about. Seeing them live is the only thing better than hearing them on cd, though unfortunately they plan on an "Indefinite Sabbatical" starting this summer (2003). Playing amazing music for more than a decade straight while waiting for the american population to get up and realize their skill would wear me down as well... The only issue i have with this album is that it could be plenty longer. At only ten songs, it forces me to listen to it multiple times to get the same dose I normally require.
