I used one of these growing up, and finally got one of my own. I find this more versitile than the other type of post hole diggers. If you need deeper hole, just add a section of 3/4" pipe and keep on digging! It can generally dig thru soils with rocks smaller than golf balls, no problem.

Digging post holes made easy,

This auger make digging post holes in clay extreamly easy. Had the hole dug for an 8 foot 4"x4" post dug in less than 15 mins. Using regular post hole diggers, maul and metal rods took over an hour the month before for another post.

I borrowed a similar 6-inch auger from a friend last year when I needed to replace some gate posts. It worked great. This year I was constructing a carport with 6x6 posts and needed 8-inch holes. I liked the idea, but was leery of the durability of the adjustable auger. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the heftiness of the mechanism and the ease of adjustment. I am a small person and no spring chicken but with this auger, was able to dig 3-foot holes in less than 15 minutes. If you have lots of rocks in your soil, you may still need a digging bar to dislodge them. I was able to remove most of the rocks I encountered by switching direction, back and forth, with the auger a few times.
I am very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend this auger. Unless you're into digging holes as part of an exercise and weight loss regime, save yourself some time and frustration, get one of these puppies!

I bought this to dig holes for a large arbor I was building. I haven't previously used any other tools for digging holes, but I was happy with how this performed. The holes I dug were 39" deep, so they took quite a while to dig, but I was able to get a 39" hole dug in just over an hour. It dug into the soil pretty quickly and did a great job of pulling the dirt out of the hole, too. There's not a ton of weight behind this though, which is good for pulling dirt out of the holes, but if you're on the lighter side you might have a lot of difficulty pushing this down with enough force to really dig into the ground. For me, the initial 24 inches" or so was pretty quick and easy (about 15-20 minutes) but after that the handle was so low that it was difficult to push down with enough force to dig very well and turn at the same time. I saw someone suggest adding another section of 3/4" pipe to extend the auger, but I didn't do that. Regardless, I definitely recommend this for digging your holes - I just don't recommend digging those holes in 90 degree heat =]

I have been looking locally for an auger style post hole digger without success. My father used to sell them 40 years ago in his hardware store so I knew they used to exist. Finally I did a Google search and found this auger available on Amazon. I didn't hesitate to purchase! The item arrived within the expected window. It works like a dream! I'm not quite ready for my next fence project but I did test it out on some practice holes. We have heavy clay/hard sand/rocky soil. It chews through everything like magic. Much superior to the clam shell stye digger.

I have dug many a hole in my time and until about 2 months ago I have always used an original Vaughan Auger that I got from my grandfather. The Vaughan lasted quite a while, but it finally broke and was beyond welding and I had to find a new one. I searched everywhere for the same auger and after months of no success, I finally decided to give the Seymour design a try and I am pleasantly surprised. This auger can dig a 36" deep 8" diameter post hole in less than five minutes. Granted after about 3 at that pace you need a break, but it is capable. The only negative about the auger is getting the soil to release from the jaws. I am from the Cincinnati area and we have heavy clay soil. I order to get the clay out of the jaws I stuck a shovel in the ground and used the tip of the handle to jar the soil loose. Bottom line, you won't find an easier digging implement that doesn't require gasoline. I highly recommend the product to anyone who needs to dig post holes without machinery.

Purchased to install new fence.I had fifteen holes to dig. This auger was easy to adjust, and super tough. It cut through the dirt with no problem, also cut small roots. It makes a hole with smooth sides.I thought the handle might be the weak part-but I was wrong this is a well built tool.

Digging Holes,

I purchased this product last summer and I love it. I have dug holes for my roses, fence post, shrubs, and grape vines.
We have very hard clay and this product does great. I love that it is adjustable and also love that I don't have to beg a stronger person to dig shrub planting holes for me. I read somewhere that it might have to be sharpened, but after 20 plus holes it still performs perfect.

Excellent Tool,

My father-in-law wanted to purchase an auger style post hole digger and I found this one. We have been quite satisfied with the job it does. It cuts through the soil like a hot knife through butter. This product will require maintenance and probably blade sharpening to keep the smooth action I already described. It also works wonderful for digging holes for planting smaller trees.

Not for big roots but otherwise works great,

When the ground was moist this tool powered right through it and left a perfect hole for my fence posts. But it can't cut through tree roots any larger than a half inch or so. The tool sort of bounces off the root pushing the tool to the side. I've been thinking that it might cut through if I sharpened the cutting edges. I ended up cutting the roots with a sawsall. In really dry hard pack the tool had difficulty. After soaking the ground overnight the tool went right through. One of my holes was very close to the road so it went through about six inches of packed gravel before getting to the soil. The gravel was difficult but the tool made it through. Overall I rate the tool a 4 because it leaves a really nice hole and is actually fun to use when the soil is good. It seemed that the deeper I went the easier it got. Luckily we have no big rocks around here, just a lot of tree roots.I should add that this is the first and only tool I've ever used to dig post holes. I've read about post hole diggers and seen people use them on TV and Youtube before. Mostly they say it's hard work and the traditional post hole diggers don't work well or are hard to use so I was really hesitant to try to do this job myself. So I was surprised to find that using this tool was easy and fun. It helped that the first few holes were in easy soil with no roots or rocks but the job overall was much easier than I expected it to be. |
