Book Description

February 8, 2000
Constructing his art in the same improvisational spirit as the Abstract Expressionist painters, Lipton used innovative techniques and materials, and created metal works that dealt with issues of the post-war world, from nature and flight to the theories of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, April 21, 2011
This review is from: Seymour Lipton: An American Sculptor (Hardcover)
This book serves as a wonderful tribute to a great artist. Even better is the introduction by Irving Sandler, who sheds much needed light on the canonization process and outright intolerance of some critics and artists of the 1960's. Indeed it is time to reevaluate Lipton and the other construction sculptors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new look at Lipton and Abstract Expressionism, March 25, 2002

This review is from: Seymour Lipton: An American Sculptor (Hardcover)
It was good to see a new approach to Abstract Expressionist sculpture where the author discusses sculpture and not painting in the context of America in the 1950s and beyond. The text discusses the themes of the era and the way the art represents those themes and American culture. Beautiful images.

I am not clear on the qualifications of the author of this book in relation to this topic. Have questions about her ethical practices as an appriaser and advisor.
