Sgt. Rock doing anything but "takin' it easy",
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Sgt. Rock's Combat Tales, Vol. 1 (Comic)
There is always one fundamental problem with reading combat stories featuring a hero; the hero must always win against great odds. Other men in his unit and the enemy can die like flies, but at most the hero can receive a serious wound from which they fully recover. Nevertheless, the stories can be exciting and contain deeper messages about war beyond the hero killing a lot of the enemy but never, ever seeming to make any progress.
Sgt. Rock is the greatest of all the comic book war heroes; he has no super powers, although his combat "radar" often bears a similarity to Spider Man's spider sense. He is a superb fighting man, dedicated to protecting the other men in his unit yet always harboring a subtle sense of the absurdity of warfare and the waste of resources. The stories in this collection continue that tradition Rock is at his best once again, fighting hard and lamenting fallen comrades on his way to the next battle. |
