From School Library Journal
PreS-K-Malkie spends the day helping her mother clean, shop, cook, and set the table in preparation for the Jewish Sabbath, asking after each activity, "Is it Shabbos yet?" Clearly intended for a religiously observant audience, this book has very limited appeal both textually and visually. The child's mother consistently answers her daughter's question with a "No, Malkie,-Now we have to-" leaving readers unfamiliar with the structured Orthodox lifestyle to wonder if the work will ever be done. The illustrations are reminiscent of those seen in early readers from the 1950s, sweet yet unremarkable. Given that the coming of Shabbos is considered a reason to rejoice, this book fails to convey the joy and warmth of this weekly celebration.-Teri Markson, Stephen S.
