Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-Malkie spends the day helping her mother clean, shop, cook, and set the table in preparation for the Jewish Sabbath, asking after each activity, "Is it Shabbos yet?" Clearly intended for a religiously observant audience, this book has very limited appeal both textually and visually. The child's mother consistently answers her daughter's question with a "No, Malkie,-Now we have to-" leaving readers unfamiliar with the structured Orthodox lifestyle to wonder if the work will ever be done. The illustrations are reminiscent of those seen in early readers from the 1950s, sweet yet unremarkable. Given that the coming of Shabbos is considered a reason to rejoice, this book fails to convey the joy and warmth of this weekly celebration.-Teri Markson, Stephen S. Review

Malkie just can't wait for Shabbos. But there is so much to be done! This beautifully illustrated, full-color book helps children relate to Shabbos preparations with simple descriptions of all the household tasks that enliven the end of the week. --Book Description

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful little book for young Jewish children, August 14, 2004
By
This review is from: Is It Shabbos Yet? (Paperback)
A wonderful little book which shows the magic which the Jewish Sabbath, Shabbat/Shabbos can bring to Jewish children.

It is told through the eyes of a little girl who cannot wait for Shabbos, and keeps asking her mother "It is Shabbos yet?" But there are still things to be done. It really conveys how much she is looking forwards to Shabbos, and when she says to her mother " I love Shabbos' it is with real feeling. The wonderful drawings really show the wonder of the child!

A teacher I know uses it for her students and they love it. It's a really cute book, and it's well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for Shabbat!, December 16, 2007

Well there are 2 versions of this book, with 2 different illustrators. I have the one that is more drawing "creative" more then the real life looking version.

Anyhow, till this day for 2 years, my ds, 3 years old, is loving this book! They mimick the drawings, and relate to the drawings and story line. Very good book! Wish she did more books on different subjects!
