Shacked Up
A Lifestyle Thing

The dream might be dead, but at least Rich gets to keep the flat. Okay, he's not going to be a multimillionaire by the time he's twenty, but he's still making money and he's living in his boss's London apartment rent-free. So he's got his own place, he's got the gorgeous, if high-maintenance, Portia (well, almost) -- and he's got total freedom.

You can't put a price on that.

Trouble is, now he's got Bonny, too. She landed on his doorstep one night looking to escape from her controlling mother. She needed a place to stay, and Rich could hardly say no. But with Bonny hanging about indefinitely, will Rich find his independence -- not to mention his relationship with Portia -- compromised?

The second book in the edgy new trilogy from Kate Cann.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–In this second volume in the trilogy, Rich works to get his life back on track after the loss of a lucrative ad agency account. Allowed to live rent-free in his boss's flat above the agency, he tackles the overdue college assignments he needs to complete to avoid flunking out and makes tentative steps at a reconciliation with his parents. He supports himself by drawing storyboards and wrestles with his feelings for beautiful but shallow Portia, who is willing to move to a new level of sexual involvement. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of Bonny, who is trying to break away from her overbearing mother. The flat's owners allow her to move into the apartment with Rich, who is sympathetic but not particularly pleased by this development. This fast-paced novel has the feel and language of a British sitcom. Although the plot is fairly predictable, its portrayal of contemporary London student life and its many well-drawn characters make it an absorbing read.–Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars It Keeps Getting Better, December 12, 2004
This review is from: Shacked Up (Hard Cash Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the second novel of the trilogy. This novel is even better than the first. Now, Rich is on his own and readers get to see everything that comes with it. Cann is an excellent writer and keeps the reader hooked. I can't do anything until I finish reading her novels. I was even reading this novel on Thanksgiving Day! I love how Cann can use imagery, vocabulary, and a good strong plot to make a novel that's intriguing! This is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shacked Up even better than first, June 1, 2006
This review is from: Shacked Up (Hard Cash Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
Shacked Up is an extremely well written contemporary novel by Kate Cann. Cann uses universal literary techniques such as detailed characterization and unique diction. In addition, a strong plot and picture-perfect imagery make this an enjoyable book to read.
The characterization becomes apparent in the first few pages of the story. Immediately the reader knows how Bonny feels, and that it is because of her crazy mother, Tigger. Also, as a reader I knew exactly how Rich felt every single second throughout the book.
The great thing about the vocabulary is the British words thrown in. This story does take place in London, or somewhere near, so an England dialect makes for a unique reading experience.
The purpose for Kate Cann to publish Shacked Up is for the entertainment value. She does an amazing job in entertaining the readers. Every page made me more and more interested in what was going to happen next.
The ideal audience for Shacked Up is teenagers who normally do not enjoy reading. She does a great job with attracting that type of person. This, along with the other books in the series, is the only book I have ever been able to not put down, and actually read outside of school for fun.
