5.0 out of 5 stars for everyone
This is the most beautifully written Tafseer I have ever read. It touches your heart, and opens your eyes. The 30th volume of the Quran deals with matters of faith, and the human nature. Qutb's writting is simple yet thought provoking. Also, kudo's to Salahi and Shamis for doing an excellent translation that retains as much as possible the both the beauty and meaning of...

1.0 out of 5 stars Window into the Crisis of Modern Islam
Sayyid Qutb is one of the most influential thinkers in modern Islam. It is said that many of the Muslims who were involved in recent dramatic world events were followers of his ideas. His commentary on the Quran was designed to give the believing Muslim the tools to understand the crisis of modern Islam in which the liberal democratic states of the West are dynamic and...

5.0 out of 5 stars A BETTER WORLD YET TO COME, March 2, 2011
Qutb's tafseer is by far the most reliable and the most understandable of all tafseers written. It is a social commentary as well as a framework for a better world or a better community, "You are indeed the best nation that has ever been raised up for mankind: you enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid the doing of what is wrong and you believe in God." this is one of the main ideas of "living under the Shade of the Qur'an"

But the salient point of this amazing tafseer is Tawheed. Withour it, humanity is lost and there is no redemption in this life or the life to come.
I greatly recommend it, but be advised this is not an easy read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Window into the Crisis of Modern Islam, May 24, 2003

This review is from: In the Shade of the Quran (Paperback)
Sayyid Qutb is one of the most influential thinkers in modern Islam. It is said that many of the Muslims who were involved in recent dramatic world events were followers of his ideas. His commentary on the Quran was designed to give the believing Muslim the tools to understand the crisis of modern Islam in which the liberal democratic states of the West are dynamic and dominant whereas the the Muslim states are, by and large, sunk into cultural, economic, industrial and scientific stagnation. He attributes this to what he calls "jahilliya", which is a modern reinterpretation of the state of "ignorance" the pre-Islamic tribes of Arabia were in. Although these modern states call themselves "Muslim", Qutb says they have abandoned the true path because they have allowed the original, pure Islam to be contaminated by Western ideas which are propagated by Christians and, more specifically, Jews. In his commentary on the Sura, "The Cow (al Baqarah)" he states: "The war launched by the Jews many hundreds of years ago against Islam and Muslims continues today unabated". Here we see an authentic Islamic revivalist thinker, in a pure and unadulterated form, present his belief that the problems of the Muslim world are due to consiracies that "evil, scheming outsiders" are supposedly spinning, and if only they purge themselves of these "outsiders", everything will be well. This important commentary on the Quran should ring warning bells among those who cherish freedom and oppose the hatred and racism presented here in order to understand the challenge this form of Islam is presenting to the world.

1.0 out of 5 stars fundmentalist godfather, May 1, 2004

This review is from: In the Shade of the Quran (Paperback)
Sayid qutb was an influential member of the muslim brotherhood who's writings still to this day misguide many.
Sayed qutb strips the verses from many of its colours so he can twist its neck around & mould it into whatever suits his groups aim. By what is called the expression generalization you can almost contort any verse to suit any purpose or goal. Sayed qutbs tafseer or writing isnt only antiquated or obsolete,it only values with fanatics. Its a real pity that such a name is read by many yet other moderate religious thinkers such as sheikh Mohamed Abdou are forgotton.
to those who think much of sayed qutb, i advise them to read what a past compatriot of the muslim brotherhood had to say about qutbs writings, the sheikhs name is Khalil Abdel Karim.
