Book Description

September 2001
A Poetic Novel From Calvin Miller

Life is heating up as the June sun relentlessly beats down on the townspeople of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Relief from the sweltering heat becomes a quest and a challenge to all, and in more ways than one. The pressing weight of loss and heartache causes those suffering to seek out the refreshing places of God's comfort. They must learn to lean on one another more than ever before.

From Ingrid Mueller's window, the shadow of the bronze sundials reminds her it is time to give her husband, Hans, the medicine for his back. But Hans so discovers his nagging back pain is much more serious than anyone thought. What will he do? And how will Ingrid cope with this news?

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this follow-up to Snow and Wind, Miller returns to Depression-era King of Prussia, PA. Otto Mueller wants Isabel "Dizzy Izzy" McCaslin to marry him, but the return of Bible salesman Benny Baxter, who enraptured Izzy's heart once before, works against him. Isabel is torn between a true love of God and the fanaticism Benny ingrained in her on his last visit. Erick Mueller is busy planning his wedding to his beloved Mary when a ghost from her past steps in and destroys his future happiness. And a long-forgotten secret is uncovered that could destroy the McCaslin family unless Isabel's detestable brother Peter finds a way to hide it. Although Shade ends with several questions still unanswered (will there be other books down the road?), fans of the previous novels will want to find out what has happened here. 4.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle and Compassionate Story, January 29, 2002
This review is from: Shade (Snow Series #3) (Hardcover)
Shade is the third novella in a series by Calvin Miller all centered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Set during the Great Depression, this historical novel portrays the intertwined lives of two Lutheran families, the Muellers and the McCaslins.

The patriarch of the Mueller family is diagnosed with terminal cancer. His wife and two grown sons, Erick and Otto, must come to terms with mortality while confronting their own relationship problems.

Erick's fiancé meets a man from her past, the twin brother of her dead husband. Erick fears her feelings for her husband will transfer to the brother. Otto's girlfriend leaves him when her first love, a Bible salesman, returns to King of Prussia. The salesman uses the love of Christ to wheedle money out of the most impoverished Christians.

The highlight of this novella is the poetry written by Otto. It resounds with love of God and love of family. This gentle story of compassion, healing, and loyalty takes only a short time to read, but its characters remain memorable long after this book is back on the shelf.
