So the only two reasons I bought this book too read were, 1: It was .99 so I wasn't loosing much had I bought once again another boring annoying book. 2: the reviews. I couldn't help but notice all of the good reviews on it. The quick summary about the book did this novel no justice. My first impression was "Great another cheesy vampire series". My gut told me to give it a chance so I did. I am SOOOOOO beyond glad I did, because I am now obsessed with this series. The two main characters are actually SMART! Hard to believe right? Sophia is so smart, and rather than being some sick puppy love that is borderline obsessive and an unhealthy relationship, they're actually good for each other. For once a book where the relationship's aren't consistently doubting each other and not communicating their feelings. Cannot wait to finish this series, then again I wish it could last a lifetime! Hate when I finish a book that I know will take a LOT to top.

I normally ignore any recommendations on Facebook, but the cover of the book intrigued me. The way I would describe the whole series is a mature, possible realism, laughter, sadness, dramatic and most importantly a strong female character!
Sofia Claremont is no Bella Swan from Twilight, she is a strong 17 year old, who has unanswered questions from her parents, who left her at a friends house a decade ago. Yet she does not let that get in her way.
Without giving too much away Derek Novak is the Prince of The Shade, which is an island hidden from humans, and its inhabitants are Vampires and their slaves. Sofia gets captured on her 18th birthday and taken to The Shade, because of a prophecy that was made when Derek was put into an enchanted sleep 400 years ago! Are the Vampires at The Shade pure monsters or can Sofia tame them?

Each chapter is written by a different characters perspective, and not one bit confusing!
Each chapter is as gripping as the last.

I will end this saying I read book 1 to book 5 in 4 days, I could not put them down and cannot wait for book 6!! If you liked The Twilight series, Sookie Stackhouse novels (True blood) and The Vampire Diaries then read these!!

I admit that I went into this story thinking that it would be an exact replica of Twilight. However, shortly into the story I found that it was not. The beginning was a little odd to me because everything happened so quickly to Sofia. However, I do appreciate that her capture and where she ends up was not drawn out, like in other novels.

I totally loved this read. I finished it in two nights, and could have finished it in one if I didn't have a four year old to look after (LOL). The story was very compelling and well told. I liked how the author gave contrasting views of the characters as well as how she was able to "pick up" where the other character left off. Others would probably find this confusing, but I thought it was used appropriately. I also loved how the characters "fell" for one another. I guess I am a hopeless romantic, and love the thought of being in love. But, I could actually feel the desire that the characters had for one another. I also loved how the vampires in this novel appeared to have more "human" emotions and characteristics, unlike other stories I have read. It was also a very interesting twist to have humans as slaves/pets. I totally understood the direction, and it was creative genius.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering reading it. You will not be disappointed. I will also be reading more in the series. Keep up the good work!

To the skeptics out there, please read the book first before making assumptions. Do not compare it to the novel Twilight or other books out there. It is quite different, and well written.

Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday party had one surprise too many, one terrible surprise. Sofia was "chosen" to become the slave of a powerful prince of vampires, the recently awakened Derek Novak and has become his "guest" at a mysterious island compound inhabited by vampires, spelled by a witch to be hidden from sunshine. While Sofia is a physical prisoner, it seems that the hunter has been captured by the game as her kind ways and warm heart melt through Derek's cold heart. What is it about Sofia that causes vamps to want her? (Besides the usual blood thing) Will Sofia bring more unrest to this small vamp haven when brother stands against brother?

A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest was over too quickly! I wanted more! Ms. Forrest has filled each page with ominous dread, light banter, a little comic relief, fear and emotional tension. Her characters are mostly "nice." Sure they have their moments of raw power, angry words and confusion, but overall, this is a quiet read, with a beautifully sweet glimpse of the softer side of vampires. Sofia is a strong character with an extra something about her that helps give the book an almost dreamlike quality. This is one of those reads that you can take to the beach without clawing at the sand in terror, for sure! The violence is there, but not "in-your-face," a great YA read, perfect for younger YA readers, as well!

For me, I was completely enthralled, but at the end, I was torn from my reading WAY before I was ready, I still had a few details I wanted more information on. Guess I better start on the next book in the series.
