This review is from: Shades of Blue: Symphonic Works by African American Composers (Audio CD)
This music contained in this CD captures the very essence of the human soul. In David Baker's Shades of Blue you are just going to want to get up, dance and shout for sheer joy. Ode to Life, somewhat reminiscent to me of Gershwin's American in Paris, portrays the beauty, excitement, wistfulness and joy of the adventure of life itself. The words and music of the gospel songs are eloquent, yet simplistic and cut straight to the human heart and God. Julius Williams has done a masterful job of conducting these two orchestras. His musicality is superb.
