Book Description

Whatever killed Katelina’s friend wasn’t human, but if it wasn’t an animal what else could it be? Katelina is about to find out that if you turn over the rock of reality you’ll find monsters underneath it; monsters called vampires.
But what do you do when the “monster” is so beautiful you can’t stop looking at him? Or when he’s your only hope against a coven of vampires that are hunting you because they think you’ve wronged them? Sure, maybe he saved your life, but how can you really trust someone who isn’t human? Katelina has no choice. She has to rely on Jorick to help her escape.
No matter how far they run, death chases them until their only alternative is to fight. Trapped between light and dark, the pair must travel down a path of mystery and terror as their pasts are slowly revealed and their passions ignite. To survive, the two allies must join in an ancient power-struggle that could very well decide their futures and the fate of the vampire covens.

Review

Dark, stunning and mysterious, Shades of Gray breaks through the barriers of modern writing and revitalizes the vampire genre for a new generation. Unlike modern, feeble vampire stories directed at teenagers and Hollywood, Shades of Gray takes us back to a time when vampires were still deadly creatures of the night and love knew no bounds. With the same dedication to the true vampire genre that authors such as Stephen King (Salem's Lot) and Anne Rice (Queen of the Damned) write with, Joleene Naylor, in her first book, Shades of Gray, has captured the very essence of their darkness, the depths of their emotions, and reminded us of the horrifying reality of what it means to be a vampire.

In this first installment of the Amaranthine Series, we are introduced to the two, main characters, Jorick and Katelina ; eternally bound souls who are also victims, caught helplessly between the worlds of light and darkness. Jorick, a vampire trapped in a world he despises, must break the code of his own kind in order to protect a mortal; while Katelina will be forced to choose between the emptiness of her life in the world above, or be further drawn into a tangled web of conflict and deception amongst the warring vampires.

In a time of lust, hatred, betrayal and greed, these two souls will have to face the awesome powers of the vampire clans and their minions, in an all-out battle. But, if they are to find their way through the darkness, they'll also have to overcome their own, inner demons, where they may even be lucky enough to find an unexpected spark of passion waiting to be ignited. When vampires and humans mix together, what happens next is not pleasant; when light and dark combine as one, there is sure to be pain and suffering.

Yet, out of the darkness, the light will shine. From suffering, new strengths shall be discovered. From war, unexpected heroes shall arise. And, in this first book from the Amaranthine Series, you will embark on an epic journey through the forbidden world that exists only in your nightmares.

The author, Joleene Naylor, has crossed boundaries that very few authors ever dare approach. She has taken the publishing world by storm with tremendous courage, writing her story in the only way it could be: unbound by the barriers of modern society and political correctness. Naylor has a refreshing and talented approach to writing with her unique and uninhibited style that is thoroughly exhilarating. Straying from the modern storylines that tend to poison the vampire genre, Naylor has brought to life the frightening world of vampires through her accurately detailed and vividly graphic depictions of their dark natures. She has remained true and loyal to the most dedicated of vampire fans around the world. This is not your Hollywood-induced, watered-down tale of vampires. Rather, Shades of Gray is a blood-curdling, epic saga that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat and infiltrate the darkest corners of your soul. The only thing you'll be wanting at the end of this book - is the next one! --Townhall.com, D. Kennedy, November 26, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots Of Vampire Action! November 24, 2009
Format:Paperback
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. Usually, when there's vampires involved, I turn away because it's been done. But, I gave this book a chance and I'm so glad I did. It's so full of action you won't be able to put it down. It's an easy read, flows great, and fast paced. If you're an avid reader you'll have it done in one night, 2 tops! Even if you aren't much of a reader, it's so good you'll have it done within a few nights.

There's a character for everyone to identify with in this book. Just to name a few there's Jorick, the sexy know-it-all hero who is always a bit late. Or Katelina, the dim-witted damsel in distress that always seems to find trouble. My favorite is Kateesha, the evil mistress of darkness who will do anything to get what she desires.

On another note, I highly recommend the reader be at least 13 years old. I would consider this more of an adult book. However, I know by the age 13 that's all I was reading. It depends on what you think is acceptable for your child. There is lots of violence and a bit of sex. The sex isn't very graphic but there is one scene that is quite serious that may need some explaining to readers of a young age.

Anyway, this is a great book! I highly recommend it! The only con is that you finish it wanting to read the next book but, there isn't one.... at least not yet.

I was in the middle of reading Charlaine Harris's True Blood series and eager to read anything else vampire that didn't have a poster, keychain, tee shirt, action figure, Xbox game, pendant, change purse, or lunch box to accompany it so I picked up Shades of Gray. Joleene's blurb begins: Dark, stunning and mysterious, Shades of Gray breaks through the barriers of modern writing and revitalizes the vampire genre for a new generation. This was enough for me, so I agreed to read it.

The book is indeed dark, stunning, and mysterious. I'll give Naylor that. Her blurb even throws a punch to "those vampires" I've already mentioned: Unlike modern, feeble vampire stories directed at teenagers and Hollywood, Shades of Gray takes us back to a time when vampires were still deadly creatures of the night and love knew no bounds. Feeble vampires? I love that.

And so we meet Katelina and Jorick. Our light and our dark. Our Juliet and Romeo. Our human and our vampire that are romantically drawn to one another, but caught up in the drama that separates our two worlds and makes things complex. Jorick hates what he is and the code he is bound to, and is willing to break it for Katelina's sake. Meanwhile, Katelina is being hunted by the vampire clan, after the mysterious death of her lover, and Jorick much choose to either save her or succumb to what he really is. A vampire.

Yep. We've read this before, or waited for the movie. And I fully admit I thought I had this book all wrapped up with a pretty bow by the time I was half way through it. But while Naylor's plot may not be completely original, her characters are. I did enjoy at least reading about adult vampires. Beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining January 15, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This is one of those books that starts off with a bang and keeps going. I couldn't think of one dull moment. Even parts that could have dragged on kept my interest because they advanced the romantic sub-plot between Katelina and Jorick, which led to the question, "How far will someone go to protect someone they love?"

The book starts when Katelina recalls finding Patrick (who is sort of a boyfriend but not really) dead in his apartment. Then she gets a phone call from someone telling her that he knows who killed Patrick. She debates on whether or not to go to an isolated spot to find out--and she finally decides to go. From there, her life drastically changes because all of the sudden she's thrown into a world filled with good and evil vampires, and some want to see her dead.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the author's sense of humor wonderful, but even with humor, there are some serious moments. The key is to blend the two, and I thought the author succeeded very well with that. I would recommend this for readers who prefer more mature themes. For me, this was a definite plus. Sometimes I get bored of light reads and need something with more substance. It tackled just how evil some vampires could get, and that made me appreciate Jorick even more. Parts of it were spooky, like the house Jorick took Katelina to that had very odd people in it. That was my favorite part, especially when he warned her not to leave her bedroom until he came for her. Of course, I wanted to know why, and the author didn't disappoint me.

The story did end with me wanting to read more, so I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love vampire books, you will *love this one. June 23, 2010
Format:Paperback
I am a big PNR and UF fan. I have read all the big names out there. I had never heard of Ms. Naylor, but I happened to be browsing my kindle and thought "what the hey, give it a try!" I was left with my mouth hanging open at how amazing this story was. And by amazing, I mean from the stand point of a girl who likes her smexy heroes and fast paced action. The action was non-stop and fun. Jorick is to die for. She gives just enough of his motivation and background to make me want more. I can't wait for the next book. I feel Ms. Naylor deserves to be on the shelves right next to Ms. Harris, Ms. Frost and Ms. Garey!
