Editorial Reviews

Review

Oozes all the necessary passion of any good romance novel. . . . The romance enthusiast won't be disappointed with this novel that never skimps on passion or story.
--Kirkus Reviews

A must-read murder mystery. . . . This book is excellent from beginning to end and the mixture of mystery and romance will leave the reader wanting more.

I've never lived in the low country, but novelist Kim Sanders made me feel as though I had. Her description of the scenery made me want to visit that part of the country. Sam is the reason I liked this book because she made me see the things she saw and feel her emotional turmoil. There's a lot more to this book than romance. This book keeps you guessing til the very end. The strong characters and the plot are just two of the reasons you want to keep reading. I'm hoping to hear more from this author.

Ms. Sanders hits just the right balance of mystery and romance, serious situations and humor. She has a deft touch with descriptions of both people and scenery, her dialogue is believable, and she managed to write a murder mystery without any gore. I look forward to meeting some of the secondary characters again in her future books, especially the hero's sister Abby. Like some of the other reviewers, I found it hard to believe this was a debut novel. Bravo!Shades of Gray

I like to finish what I start. I finished over 80% of this book before I just gave up, thinking, "WHY on EARTH am I still subjecting myself to this?" About halfway through the book, I was only sticking with it to see how the "mystery" would be solved, but by 80-something% I realized I just didn't care. I didn't care about the plot OR the characters.

Speaking of characters, there are NO redeeming male characters in this book, except (perhaps) Ben (who is dead from page one, so I can't be certain). The men are manipulative and are constantly preying on the woman when they are at their most weak/vulnerable-- and of course the women go along with it because they just can't resist-- and somehow we are supposed to think that is romantic?!

I downloaded the book looking for a good thriller/mystery and ended up with a thin plot, terribly unrealistic dialog, sexual manipulation disguised as "romance," and characters for whom I felt absolutely nothing (except for the men, who I mostly abhorred). Glad I didn't pay for this one.

This romantic suspense did keep my interest, so the writing was such the plot moved the story forward, and I wanted to know what happened at the end. The writer did a good job in describing the surroundings and setting of the book so I could picture everything. I didn't buy the book because of its cover. I am not sure what prompted me to get it, probably the story line. I definitely look at book covers and I think this one would be a lot better; this one does not, in my opinion, fit the story. I have to say the title of the book made me think it was going to be similar to another book with a similar title and I was surprised it was nothing like it, which is good.

I have a kindle fire so it is very easy to highlight words or whole sentences where I found problems with the story. I got totally confused between who John and Jim were. It appears to me they are one in the same guy, because I couldn't figure out who came to check on Sam's place and met Maggie in the process and the guy Maggie fell in love with. And there was the guy Abby, Caleb's sister, kissed; was it John or Jim or was there really two different men with those names and I missed it (and if I did, I apologize)? Or did the author forget which name she used for this love interest of Maggie's, and which one Abby kissed, I had to ask myself? In an author's first book, they tend to use the same letter for the first name in the book and it makes it quite confusing. I know, I've done it too.

For a first book, I did enjoy the story line, and it was an enjoyable light read.

This book had the potential to be great. The descriptions are wonderful. The author can really paint a picture with words. The plot was also good, it was easy to follow and made sense. The characters were interesting and I found myself caring for them as I read. The story also held my interest throughout but there were too many eye-rolling conveniences that bothered me. It was obvious the author used extreme circumstances to make the story work. For example, at the end of the story, the main character's dog jumps through a plate glass window to save her. And this is only one example of certain things that are just too unrealistic in this story.
I just wish the author had thought certain things through before publishing. She could have come up with more realistic avenues to make the story great.

This was a real page turner. Sam has been framed for the murder of her friend and mentor. Her attorney isn't really interested in helping to prove her innocence. In walks an ex-boyfriend who steps up and says he is representing her. Together they work to prove that she did not do it. Eventually they uncover who did it and why, and discover they are still in love. I thoroughly enjoyed the book

Forgive me the cliche of judging a book by it's cover, but Shades of Gray's cover gave no indication of the Harlequin Romance, soft porn, cheesy content contained within the pages of the book. The story and character development was coming along just fine until I got to 17% read on my kindle, where the first "love" scene hideously occurred during an otherwise enjoyable storyline. Although I'm glad it was a free download, I'm disappointed I wasted my time reading the first quarter of the book.
