5.0 out of 5 stars It's 30 years too late!, July 30, 2002

I wish I'd had this book years ago when I was raising my children. I tended then to make decisions without even being aware of other options (sometimes, I still do!). The author spells out many options and gives us a framework to think about them. It's too late for me with regard to raising children--but not too late for my children! I will give this book to my adult children, and use the concepts to apply to other decisions in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shades of Gray, June 16, 2002

This review is from: Shades of Gray: A Mother's Guide to Work and Family Choices (Paperback)
As a mother who has had to make this difficult choice, I truly appreciated Hennighausen's book on this topic. I only wish that something like this was available when I had to make my decision. The decision to stay home from work to raise my children, on one level was a no-brainer, but on many other levels was the hardest decision I ever had to make. I bought a copy for my oldest daughter (my decision-maker). She is now 22 and will be making the same choices in the future. Thanks, Lynn, for a great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of Gray fills a gap, June 13, 2002

This review is from: Shades of Gray: A Mother's Guide to Work and Family Choices (Paperback)
I have read many books on motherhood, finding balance as a woman, staying in touch with my spouse, and working motherhood -vs- staying at home. SHADES OF GRAY seemed to tie all of those topics together in an easy to read, thought-provoking format. I was glad to read that I was not the only one to have issues with balancing kids, spouse, home, and work! SHADES OF GRAY also gave me tools to sort through my problems and help me create solutions for myself. Seeing profiles of different women and their problems outlined in the book was also very interesting. I see what I may go through in the future!! Thank you for writing this book.

After reading this book, it occurred to me that the concepts and decision making strategies included within don't just apply to a person's choice to work or stay at home with his/her children. We each face crossroads on a daily basis, Hennighausen provides valuable tips and tools for making decisions in our lives. I would recommend this book to anyone - whether he/she had children or not!

Shades of Gray is a practical guide for women at any of the many crossroads they encounter in their professional and family lives. The combination of real-life stories, journal suggestions with space to write, and resource recommendations makes it a useful tool for moms who have to continually reinvent their approach to work lives and commitments. This tool truly guides women through a process of prioritizing so they can make the best work/family choice for themselves and for their families. Concise enough for busy moms, this is great encouragement for the journey!

I loved reading the profiles of REAL Mom's and their struggles with "balance". I came away from this read realizing that, LIFE in general iS ONE BIG BALANCING ACT, even before you add work and family.
