About the Artist

Bryan "Braille" Winchester was borin in Portland, Oregon in 1981. He has also lived in New Jersey, and California but is usually found touring the country.

Growing up in Portland, Braille started making bedroom tapes at the age of 13. These tapes are laughable now, but it was that first spark of creating that continued to push him down this path. Between ages 14 and 15 he started recording in studios around Oregon. It went from four tracks to digital 8 tracks, and so forth. His first release was under the name Reflection and it was called "The Greyhound Sampler". The name came from the fact that all the songs were recorded after taking trips on the greyhound bus. All material was recorded with Ill Tripp of Labklik, and Kyd Ryze (now known as Paul Wright).

Over the last 5 years Braille has been a part of over 5 different groups. The most notable of these, and probably the one that will last the longest is Lightheaded.

Always on a musical mission, BRAILLE has become one of rap’s best-kept secrets. He has released three solo albums, performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan with artists like the late James Brown, De La Soul and others, been named one of the “Next 100” by URB magazine and collaborated with rap heavyweights such as 9th Wonder and Pigeon John. While this album will probably not be discovered by most hip hop fans, it definately deserves its praise.

Shades of Grey comes out of the gate swinging, and rolls like a freight train right through the finish line. For being somewhat of an unknown in the hip hop industry, Braille has compiled an incredibly fresh and original album. Every song on this disc has a strong lyrical presence, leaving your mind working long after the song is over. The beats are top notch, and produced by some of the most prominant names in the industry. While this album will probably not be discovered by most hip hop fans, it definately deserves its praise. It is very, very good. Who knew that shades of grey could be so colorful?

One of my first finds in the underground was rapper and spiritual lyricist Braille. Shades of Grey represents his sophomore work, which actually improves upon his first release (not largely unavailable except in digital download format). Unlike a comet's tail that burns its brightest only when you first see it, Braille's second album marks something of a transition. Unlike the basement beats that sound almost experimental and a bit lacking in his first album, Braille's coming-into-his-own as an artist is without question on Shades of Grey. There's no crib sheet he's using for this album. It's all personality. And it's all Braille.

The high energy flow of the artist from Oregon that everyone has come to know is crystallized on the second album. The title song "Shades of Grey," which has become itself something of an anthem and produced by underground sensation Tony Stone, may perhaps be one of the best hip hop songs ever made. Its catchy vocals, bruising delivery, and salient lyrics grab your attention and demand you answer the questions he poses. But this is true of the album. Braille's not only got an ear for beats, almost every song has a lyrical composition that outlasts even the artist's presence. You forget you're listening to a kid wise beyond his years and imagine you're walking with a tour guide, who is taking you through your own life's story and requiring you to see the greater purpose that we're all created for. That is Braille's program. And he pulls it off with class and demonstrative talent.

Again, this is one of those albums that compel a good review due to the marriage of beats and lyrics invested in each song. It's rare to find any album that performs so excellently that there is nothing wasted...no mindless interludes, no repetitive hooks, etc. The only thing wrong with the album is Braille doesn't leave the listener any time to break away from the music! No underground collection is complete without Shades of Grey.

I first heard Braille as part of the lightheaded album pure thoughts which I picked up for $5 from a used cd bin. My cover differs from the one shown on amazon, I think it is a canadian copy. Braille is one talented individual and with his new release he is sure to get a lot more attention in the underground scene. I have only listened to the samples from this album and am definetly picking it up. I love Kno's (cunninlyguists) production but Tony Stone steals the show on this album. Can't wait foor it to arrive.

P.S. I am dying to locate a copy of Last Emperor's album music, magic, myth. Currently the only ones I can find cost $40+

quality album with great beats and very positive messages. Hip hop artists should takes notes on this and realize that they don't have to pose to be good. Real, true, and appropriate hip-hop.
