Biography

Staind dove into bleaker recesses than ever before and surfaced with their heaviest and most hypnotic album to date, STAIND, their self-titled, seventh studio album.
The multi-platinum Massachusetts hard rock outfit—Aaron Lewis, Mike Mushok, and Johnny "Old School" April—pushed itself to the very brink. There was struggle and strife, but, as a result, Staind constructed a collection of chaotically… Read more in Amazon's Staind Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!, June 22, 2005
This review is from: 14 Shades of Grey (Clean) (with Limited Edition Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
This album is amazing. Staind has very thought-provoking and deep lyrics to their songs, as well as great talent in how they portray them. That's all I have to say. What else is there to say about such a great band?
1)Price to Play: 5/5 - Incredible opening track. The heaviness almost catches me off guard every time! :) It talks about how the game of life is a bad influence on people.

2)How About You:4/5 - Cool track. It talks about the danger of conforming to make friends.

3)So Far Away: 4/5 - Another good song. The singer describes being far away from his problems with someone he loves.

4)Yesterday: 10/5 - My favorite track! It has the most amazing sound to it. And it sings about a guy being isolated, but no one caring.

5)Fray: 5/5 - Another great song. Very creepy lyrics. Its about a father's relationship with an anerexic daughter.

6)Zoe Jane: 5/5 - Great track, but very sad and very light. It sings about a father not having enough time for his daughter.

7)Fill Me Up: 5/5 - Cool track. It changes the mood a great deal with a little heaviness. And it sings about a guy loving being with his girlfriend.

8)Layne: 3/5 - An OK song. I don't listen to it that often tho. But it sings about a wife leaving her husband and child (perhaps by death), but still being there in spirit and helping them.

9)Falling Down: 5/5 - Cool song and very creative lyrics. It talks about a person being in their own world, but having a hard time coming back to reality.

10)Reality: 8/5 - Another one of my favorite tracks! Its so CREEPY!!! lol The lyrics really are amazing. It sings about a person stressed from life and trying to handle it with pills, conformity, and isolation. (And don't worry, it doesn't encourage drug use or anything). Amazing stuff!

11)Tonight: 4/5 - Another OK song, although I haven't heard it that much. But it sings about a father with his daughter not expecting so much hate from the world.

12)Could It Be: 5/5 - A very good song. Great mood and beat to it. And it sings about how a man can't change who he is at all.

13)Blow Away: 6/5 - Another really good one! And another very creepy one! It basically discusses how a man fears human mortality.

14)Intro: 9/5 - Another really good one!! Strange name for it tho. *.* But its really cool and creepy and just fits so well as an ending track. I don't know for sure what it sings about, tho.
As you can see, the numbers speak for themselves. This is a masterpiece album by Staind!

4.0 out of 5 stars Softer, but they finally have reached their full potential!, September 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: 14 Shades of Grey (Clean) (with Limited Edition Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
I totally agree with POD2, this CD is softer. But don't forget this is what Staind is meant to sound like, they've brought back the hard rock ballad. The songs are much more sadder and poignant than before. The standout song here that will bring most fans to tears is Aaron's tribute to his daughter, entitled "Zoe Jane". The song has a great musical ambience along with sad and passionate lyrics. People have lashed out at Staind for becoming too soft, they haven't. If you kindly would recall, wasn't Break The Cycle a slow album too? I agree that they have changed from the hard rock sound of Dysfunction, but I personally think that this is Staind Matured! Those that liked the hard rock sound of Break the Cycle will still be pleased with the rock on this CD, it's just a little softer. Do buy this and make Staind richer so they can continue making quality albums!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, July 6, 2003

Noope Shook (Somewhere over the rainbow . . .) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 14 Shades of Grey (Clean) (with Limited Edition Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
It looks as though the sun is finally shining through Staind’s dark and stormy life. Fans of Staind’s heavy-rocking raw sounds from “Dysfunction” but disliked the softer, more melodic tones of “Break the Cycle” will probably hate this new addition even more. Where as “Break the Cycle” had much less roaring guitars than previous works, there’s not even a hint of them in “14 Shades”. If you were hoping for a resurrection of Staind’s old sound, then quit reading now. But for those of us who liked “Break the Cycle” and were wishing for more softer stuff, here it is:
1) Price You Play - A moving song discussing the consequences of our choices. Great sound and awesome singing. One of my favorites.
2) How About You - Good sound behind lyrics asking listener to decide what kind of person they want to be. Very valid points are made on this song.
3) So Far Away - Another favorite. Excellent soft guitar melody, Lewis reflects on how much life has changed for himself and others.
4) Yesterday - A different sound for Staind on this song. Talks about rising above life’s challenges and finding yourself. Love the chorus.
5) Fray - Great song. Good sound, Lewis trying to convince us not to go down the same road that he did.
6) Zoe Jane - Best song on the album, best song by Staind. Aaron expresses boundless love for his daughter, Zoe Jane. The music is absolutely beautiful, magnifying Lewis’s incredible voice in such a way that I can hardly keep myself from crying each time I hear it. I live for songs like this.
7) Fill Me Up - Pretty good song. Cool guitar riff, I assume the song is directed to Lewis’s wife, thanking her for the strength she gives him.
8) Layne - Awesome song! A tribute to Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley. Written in Alice’s own style, this is the perfect song to remember Staley by.
9) Falling Down - Pretty cool track. Lyrics rebuke prideful people with a sort of ‘what goes around comes around’ attitude. Music’s pretty good.
10) Reality - Good song. Basically saying to live life the best you can and not be afraid of it; great music.
11) Tonight - Basically another good song about how things have changed. Music’s great and I absolutely LOVE the chorus.
12) Could It Be - One of my favorites! Interesting guitar sample, great chorus. Pretty much talking about being yourself, sort of.
13) Blow Away - A great song. Has a mournful kind of sound to it; Aaron singing regretfully about fading memories and how he wishes to be alone.
14) Intro - Good way to end the album. Aaron thanks the people that he loves and beats down on those he dislikes; music’s amazing and Lewis sings with compassion and anger; one of my favorites.
It all sounds like Staind, just much calmer. “14 Shades of Grey” is Staind’s best album yet and everyone should own it. If your even thinking about getting it, then stop thinking and do it. If you liked “Break the Cycle” then you’ll love this one even more. Trust me.
