5.0 out of 5 stars Creative, Provocative Photography, March 8, 2011
This review is from: Shadi Ghadirian: A Woman Photographer from Iran (Paperback)

Here is a creative approach to depicting women in Iran. The book is divided into 5 sections defined by time and content.

The first section has sepia toned photos of women in traditional (classical?) portrait settings wearing formal traditional clothing. Where faces are shown, the women stare dead pan into the camera. These photos depict the disconnect of attire and the modern world and/or the anonymous woman reflecting life, knowledge or art.

In the "Like Every Day Series" women's faces are represented by their household tools. I'm not certain how the "Censor's Series" got out of Iran, but these mixed media images show an attempt to hide pieces of the woman, which "Be Colorful" does in a more acceptable (to the censors) way.

The fifth series is most provocative. It shows how the woman is comprised of in computer communications protocols. Perhaps these are her lifeline to the world.

This is a small but fascinating collection, showing the vibrancy of art in Iran.
