5.0 out of 5 stars This book is rich in detail and intrigue
Shadow is a wonderful mischevious character who is caught up in a mystery that is out of her league. she is an intriguing matriarch of the elves of the heartwood, and she is a most cunning trickster. This book is rich in detail and intrigue. a reader who loves a mischevious fantasy with a lot of dry humor and action will love Shadow and the other books in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow is possibly the coolest "elf-book" around..., October 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
"Never trifle with an elf, a theif, or a woman... Shadow is all three!" How incredibly accurate. Here's a good read about a cocky, mischevious theif who steals what she wants, when she wants, be it a purse, or a kiss from a cute fellow... Nobody would mind a life like that! However, there's a slight problem within the Guild of Thieves, mainly involving the leader, who happens to be a corrupt, gluttonous, incompetant and generally MALE guy. Between running for her life and running for a good look at the random cute fellow she was following through the crowd, this book is darn amusing! The plot takes some great twists, especially with the appearance of her friends. Keep watch for the mysterious assassin Blade, and beware her price...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read!, January 27, 2003

This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
I have read this book more than a few times, each time being just as enjoyable as the time before. Anne Logston's vision of what an elf really is matches mine almost perfectly. She gives her characters depth, not from over-lengthy descriptions, but from behaviors and actions the characters take.

This is a relatively short book, but it is engaging and full of life: not as depressing or angst-ridden as many novels out on the market.

The only issue I have with her writing is the way she spells 'elven' as elvan'. Aside from this minor detail, however, Shadow is a wonderful book! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a fun, light fantasy story that the imagination can build upon endlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars imaginative story, April 15, 2010
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet approriatley foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but yet relatable enough to makeit viable. I love her humor and her characterization.

5.0 out of 5 stars A favorite of almost 12 years, April 5, 2006
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
I remember buying this book when I was 12 at my local bookstore for 50 cents. Since then I'm surprised it hasn't fallen apart. Shadow is a lively, thrilling and entertaining book. You won't want to put it down. I know I haven't, I've read it at least twice a year ever since I bought it and I never get tired of it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Good Adventure, July 3, 2007

I bought this book upon the thirteen five star (or so) recommendations. I really need to add this review to give any viewers of this product a second opinion.

First, this is a novel about a female elven thief who's the perfect most-awesome beautiful thief. She's stolen the wrong thing from the wrong person and now she's involved in a plot to stop the politics of the city from being changed for the worse.

I love fantasy adventures, but this book reads like one I would have enjoyed when I was fourteen. In fact, if you're fourteen and enjoy playing D&D, you might enjoy this now. It's certainly no worse than Piers Anthony. If you're older and you like character development or interesting cities or a well-plotted story, I'd recommend against this novel. It's a shallow book with a Mary Sue as a main character. It's like cotton candy for the mind, only not that good. I like some cotton candy books, if you know what I mean, and this is not one of the ones I enjoyed.

Please, think twice before buying this novel. If you really want to give it a try, buy it used.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad to meet my friend Shadow again!!!, January 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
I read "Shadow" years ago, and absolutely loved it. Well-written, adventurous, magical, witty and laugh-out-loud funny. Then, while moving to a new city, I lost my copy of the book. I shrugged it off at first - I had many more books, after all, and I'd read my copy over and over until it nearly fell apart. But every now and then I'd feel a little wistful and wish I could read it again (yes, it's that good). Unfortunately, when I finally tried to find and buy another copy - I found, to my astonishment, that the book was out of print! Searches of nearby libraries resulted in no luck - the ones that did carry the book had never gotten their copies back (apparently the readers of those copies "forgot" to return them...or simply didn't want to. A backhanded compliment to the book, to be sure). So I gave up looking for a Shadow, certain that the book was gone for good.

But today, just for fun, I did a search here on Amazon - and found it! I've immediately ordered my copy and can't wait to read about my old elf friend Shadow again. She is, by far, the best elf character ever written. She has all of the mischief, smarts, skills and heart you'd expect and want an elf to have. She's nothing like Tolkien's stately, dignified elves - she's like...well, if Captain Jack Sparrow ever had a sister, she'd be Shadow. She's a wonderful character in a wonderful book, a fantasy novel that remembers to include a little fun and humor with the magic (far too many fantasy novels are dark and dreary in tone. I've had quite enough of those for a while). I would seriously rank this book just under J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit when it comes to an enjoyable fantasy story. I can't recommend it highly enough. My only disappointment is that this version of the book doesn't use the original cover art, which, in my opinion, captured Shadow's look and personality perfectly. Oh well. I'll just have to be happy with Anne Logston's rich, wonderful prose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shadow, February 25, 2008
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
By Fortune's left hand this is by all means the slowest fantasy book I've ever read. And being a lover of the genre, know at times, even the best of stories can get slow. But this is I mean slow, with very little action. However the plot was intricately woven, and developed rather nicely over the hundred and seventy some-odd pages.

It is a fantasy tale of unique proportion. I thought Shadow was a goner a few times, but she managed to come out on top (no pun intended with her promisciousness and all.)

I have to read another of Logston's book, hopefully there is more action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun story but short book. Good for me since I have a short attention span :0)., November 7, 2006

This review is from: Shadow (Hardcover)
When I was a kid, about 14, I never looked towards books for entertainment. One of my friends did. He handed me this book because it's a small read and had a thief as the main character. Playing a thief in D&D made me give the book a chance, well the book captivated me. I read it in a few days. Years later I was reminded of this special little book and found it here on Amazon and have read it again. Just as good the second time. The plot isn't original but is well written. The main character is a free spirit and her wits/sense of humor keeps you smiling. Trust me for the price and the story you can't beat it. Give this book a chance. If you like this book Anne Longston has other shadow books (Shadow Hunt & Shadow Dance)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any Fantasy Fan!, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Shadow (Paperback)
I first purchased this book in 1992 when I was in high school. It became an instant favorite and was passed around all of my friends. My copies are pretty tattered from use, and I am glad to see that they are being reprinted.

I love all of Anne Logston's stories, but the Shadow series are my favorites. They are quick reads; you can easily curl up for an hour or so and finish this book.

Anyone who loves fantasy will enjoy these novels!
