Book Description

February 2005
On Dulunae, the Planet of Two Moons, a ragged band of teenagers called the Outcasts search for a place of peace known as HayVen.

Danger lurks at every step of the journey. Mindless armies of Antibodies relentlessly attack the Outcasts. Chitin — an invulnerable new breed of creature — strikes silently with lethal razor-sharp pincers. Below the scarred face of Dulunae, hideous monsters wrap poisonous tentacles around their victims.

A brutal being known only as CH'NOPS sows seeds of destruction.

Action reaches a breakneck pace as hordes of Shadow Beasts surround the Font of Knowledge where the Outcasts are hiding. Is the Font the HayVen they seek or an illusive trap? Can the Outcasts overcome their differences in language and culture to save themselves?

Join Jax, Marina, Gyro, Lynai'seth and the other Outcasts for non-stop adventure! Find out the mystery as they try to survive the Attack of the Shadow Beasts!

Author Gregory Janicke has also created special drawings of the Shadow Beasts characters for the series which are included in the books. Each book in the Shadow Beasts Series offers "Questions for Discussion." These questions are specially designed to stimulate conversation among readers about cultural similarities and differences, the importance of taking responsibility, the value of science and many other interesting topics.

More About the Author

I first knew I wanted to be a writer at age 9 when my mother lugged home an old, beaten up Royal typewriter with twisted keys. I gazed at the strange name, QWERT YUIOP, on the second line under the numbers. I knew QWERT and I would be friends. I pounded away at the Royal for hours on end to my grandmother's chagrin, composing very short stories about living lightning, malevolent mud monsters and sinister prairie grass. I was from Illinois, where these things can be found.

QWERT and I kept pounding out stories through grade school and high school. My grandmother warned me to stop the pounding, but my mom said it was okay while she was at work. In college, I studied art and writing and won a short story contest. I kept writing, kept publishing, kept typing up to my time at a Great Midwestern Newspaper, when the era of the Royal gave way to the computer. QWERT survived the change.

Then came the Shadow Beasts and The Outcasts. I hope you enjoy them.

Best,
Gregory Janicke

5.0 out of 5 stars Love your series!, January 5, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Shadow Beasts: Attack of the Shadow Beasts (Paperback)
Hello! I must say that I love your series. The first day my dad came back, he gave me the books to read. And from that very second I started to read them. Your words seem so real that more than twice I actually thought that I was the character in the book, fighting the monsters. I love fiction books and I can read them 24/7. Your series were the best books I ever read.(I'm not just saying that).

And your illustrating, don't even get me started. I've been trying to draw like you draw ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I'm not even sure if I made any progress.

One thing that I want to know is will Jax marry Marina? And who is The One? Is it a baby? And will the Chitin ever return to their regular selves? Please could you send a summary of what will happen in the next few books? I am very anxious to know the next adventures of the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping adventure series, January 4, 2006
This review is from: The Shadow Beasts: Attack of the Shadow Beasts (Paperback)
Apart from reading everything remotely related to Harry Potter, my teenage nephew has never picked up any other book that was not required reading at school. His passion is his Playstation and nothing else. It was therefore quite a surprise when I saw him devouring Book One of The Shadow Beasts series. Curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up too and what a pleasant surprise it was!

Gregory Janicke has a way of gripping the reader from start to finish. I devoured Book One "The Dark Mystery of The Shadow Beasts" in one afternoon and was very soon looking out for Book Two "Attack of The Shadow Beast". Both books were fast paced and full of action, but it was Book Two that really developed the characters and creatures and by the end of it I felt that I knew them all as well as I did Harry, Ron and Hermione. Janicke takes the reader through Planet Dulunae like on some magical ride leaving you begging for more.

A great read for pre-teens, teens and adults that never grow up. Full of good values and teamwork, the characters and creatures of Shadow Beasts fight all odds and forces of evil in the spirit of other great stories like Harry Potter, Star Wars and maybe even Lord of The Rings. You can bet my nephew and I will keep a lookout for Book Three "The Conquering Beasts".
