Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in Utah, this is the story of 16-year-old Marcus Jenkins. After years of easy friendship with Henry, his foster brother, Marcus discovers he's feeling resentful of Henry's matter-of-fact expertise at running, schoolwork and the social scene. But Henry too has angst, namely about wanting to rediscover his Navajo family. The boys' friendship ultimately overcomes the friction between them, allowing each to see the other more clearly, regardless of the choices they make. Compelling characterization, realistic situations and a strong sense of humor makes this a rewarding boys' story. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-- Henry Yazzie, a Navajo, came to live in Utah with the Jenkins family when he was seven. He and Marcus Jenkins grew up as foster brothers. Now they are high-school juniors--racing together (Henry is the better runner), dating, working together, with Marcus happily playing second fiddle and living in Henry's shadow. When another native American, a Hopi, comes to Wakara High School, he razzes Henry. "Apple," he calls him, "red on the outside, white inside." Disturbed, Henry withdraws from his white family and decides to return to the Navajo Nation and to his heritage, perhaps not to stay, but . . . The break with Marcus is difficult for both boys. The loving, supportive Jenkins family is fully developed, and the action is revealed through Marcus' first-person narrative. Cannon has written a read-it-again story on a not-everyday topic. She draws her characters with personal, sometimes humorous idiosyncrasies, embellished with apt teentalk and teenthink. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield

Well first of all I think the book was ok the people that odopted Henry Yazzie, marcuses family brought him home one day.Marcus got along with him quickly. Then they were teens before they knew it.now they have got their own problems.Henry is not spending much time with him any more.
I liked it because it had a good sense of humor.I like the characters in it.it was a good book to read.
I enjoied it because of marcuses lists.
I would recommend this book to people who like a good sense of humor in books.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Shadow Brothers, The (Hardcover)
the book was mainly about how Henry & Marcus went through their lives together in school.the way they get through each other dating,& not getting angry or get sad at each other.Like how Marcus had to get through folowing in Henry's shadow. How Henry had to get along (or try to get along) folowing in Frank's shadow because of him losing to him several times. Mostly how Henry & Marcus keep their friendship going. one reason i liked the book are i connect with Marcus by feeling like iam folowing in a persons shadow. Henry i can connect with because some people folow in my shadow as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Living in Shadows, April 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Shadow Brothers (Paperback)
The search for personal identity, heritage, and the desire toachieve dreams are all sub-topics that are introduced in A.E. Canon'snovel for young adults called "The Shadow Brothers." Marcus and his Navaho foster brother Henry have a close friendship and sibling relationship. However, Marcus struggles to find his own identity because he feels he is lost in Henry's shadow of intelligence, good-nature, popularity, and great ability to run. Marcus also struggles with the choice of defining and learning more about his Navaho heritage versus accepting a great job opportunity. I believe "The Shadow Brothers" is a great book for young readers. They will be able to relate to the characters and events in their lives such as growing up, following your dreams, having a crush, and facing competition. A.E. Canon also cleverly plants a seed and enables young children to begin thinking about relevant issues such as race and assimilation. Young reader have the opportunity also to learn more about individuals of different heritages. And as equally important as the content of the book, "The shadow Brothers" is a fast-paced,witty,narrative that is sure to entertain.
