5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow Cay May 20, 2010
Intrigue, true to life characters, revenge and a simple love story all poured into a great novel - equals all the right ingredients for an academy award winning movie...mark my words. I loved the descriptions of the beautiful Florida waterways, scenic views, trees, the colors of the water and the coastal beauty - ranging from the high life in Miami to our beautiful Florida Key West and ending at the Great Bahama Bank. Ms. Bodie's portrait of the Columbian Drug Cartel would give anyone nightmares. Ruthless and relentless in their quest for cash feuled by pure greed, the "bad guys" were believable yet I felt the fright of the innocent people they antagonized. As in true life, the police were both good and on the take! I'm afraid to give too much away, so take my advice and buy this book before it runs out of print - then you will have to wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars O Cay October 14, 2011
I truly enjoyed Shadow Cay. Each short chapter drew me further in, so I anticipated the final outcome more and more. Madaleine/Lane is a strong character. I couldn't help but root for her along the way. There are ruthless and unsavory characters, too. I enjoyed not rooting for them. Unfortunately, some of the topics such as hiding problems with medical devices and illegal drug manufacturing, are a reality. Leona Bodie has weaved them into her story to make it a thriller to think about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense Driven July 13, 2010
Leona DeRosa Bodie is the author of suspense novel Shadow Cay, a novel focusing on a detective named Peter Duncan and a woman named Madeleine Nesbit who is a vigilante.

Together they forged a team that is destined for dark days, investigating a man with little conscience behind the world's most profitable enterprise. Corruption. Deception. Lies.

When your next heartbeat might kill you, you live a life on the edge and in suspense and that is exactly where these two characters created by author Leona DeRosa Bodie live. Their story is captivating, their bravery unique and the story is full of twists and turns, which leave the reader wanting more while flipping through pages.

This was a fun, easy read for me and I enjoyed curling up in my bed with a cup of tea and this book. Filled with authentic details, dates and genuine dialogue, the author weaves a credible take and credible characters.

Recommended for anyone with a desire for suspense, mystery and a good read.

The premise of the story is good but it is poorly written with too much jumping back and forth between people and places. Do not waste your time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre read March 18, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I anticipated a much better read that the one I got. The story started really well. I liked the opening chapter. In fact, it hooked me. Normally, I don't mind novels with multiple viewpoints if they are well done. Had the author stuck with a couple of POV characters the story might have been truly a great read.

However, the volume of POV characters that marched into the story was difficult to keep up. Each chapter I wasn't sure who was going to be onstage. And several times, that is all that happened, a narrator told of events happening rather than putting the reader into the action. This got worse the farther into the story I got.

There were even a few minor characters that were POV characters who appeared only a couple of times and their appearance could easily have been eliminated with no problem.

Still, I wanted to know what happened so I stuck it out. Only to be extremely annoyed by the narrative ending of the story. It totally fell flat. The ending read as if it was just an extra chapter of notes that the author had in their file to explain the final events to the author and which she felt the reader needed. We don't. We know what happened to the bad guy and the good guys and we're good. We don't need to know what happens somewhere else to a secondary... no... not even a secondary, just a character who was simply a walk on.

Very disappointed as I do think this could have been told much better if the author had stuck with fewer POV's and less narration.

I'm not likely to read another of her books.

Since I live in Florida I enjoy reading about the state and its environs. Ms. Bodie's research of Florida & the Bahamas makes me wonder how long she has really lived here. On pg. 197 Trista & Peter make shallow dives off
Elliott Key and then stand under a fresh inland waterfall. The only waterfall in the Keys would have to be manmade since the Keys are just a few feet above sea level. On pg. 207, Eduardo & Felisa, on a 150 ft. yacht are taken to Grand Bahama Island and the next day they shop in Nassau & go to Paradise Island. Duh? Freeport is on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau is on New Providence Island. Has Ms. Bodie ever been to the Bahamas? At the end of the book, there seems to be no conclusion with the characters who are still living. It just ends!!! Although I enjoyed the descriptions of the islands, the story line was very predictable with very little descriptive detail. With the buildup this book & this author received I expected better quality. Please do your homework next time.

If it were possible to give 0 stars, that's how I'd rate this book. I have been an avid reader for many, many years, and I can say without a doubt this was the worst book, in terms of plot and character development, that I have ever suffered through! Compulsive reader that I am, I have never in my life abandoned a book, no matter how boring or trivial it seemed. This one certainly deserved to be abandoned, however, and I came very close to doing so. The plot jumped from one character or event to another, but never developed any of them enough to make me care about them. I just wanted it to end so I could read a REAL book!

I normally don't like literature written in the third person, and this book was no exception, although it does have decent political themes.

More About the Author

While sailing 1,700 miles in the Bahamian Out Islands, Leona - the author of several illustrated children's stories - wrote her first adult novel. SHADOW CAY went on to become an Amazon bestseller and to win the Reader Views Literary Award for best Mystery/ Thriller/Suspense. That's when Leona started doing the happy dance and hasn't stopped yet. Her work, says Bella Online Mystery Editor Edie Dykeman, "sets a strong pace from the start with riveting action and dialogue. The beautiful Bahamas background adds contrast to the frightening action and gritty texture of her story." Carol Hoyer of Readers Views says, "Readers and reviewers are raving it's one of the best crime suspense novels in years."

Her next book SEAS OF FURY, the high-octane prequel featuring a professor addicted to boats turned amateur sleuth, will be released this winter. She's also working on one more Sea of Secrets thriller; FEAR THE WHISPERS, the Shadow Cay sequel in the series, is scheduled for release late 2014.

Leona's career took her from NJ high school English teacher to biotechnology executive and president of the Greater Miami Society of Human Resource Management before she shifted to writing books. Currently, she's Regional Director and past vice president of the Florida Writers Association. Leona resides in Florida and often collaborates with her husband, a Miami-Dade forensic specialist for 21 years, who appeared in the pilot episode of the long-running TV series, CSI.

Feel free to stop by her web site at; she is also on Twitter (@ShadowCay) and Facebook (, where you are more than welcome to follow her, friend her, and/or tell her to stop being distracted by the Internet. She has a life outside of Facebook but can't remember the password for it!
