5.0 out of 5 stars True Tragedy
Carolyn DeLoach's Shadow Chasers: The Woolfolk Tragedy Revisited is a snapshot of the people and beliefs of the south during the late 1800s. The characters are very well developed and demonstrate our post war culture. Being accused of very gruesome murders, Tom Woolfolk held on and claimed his innocence throughout the ordeal. 3.0 out of 5 stars Well...
The good thing about this book, and perhaps the best thing I can say about it, is that there is a huge body of historical information within it's pages. I myself have visited the Woolfolk site as a child and as a young man, and I've been interested in the story for years. I've heard all of the local legends and wives' tales, and I've long wanted to know what actually...

5.0 out of 5 stars True Tragedy, October 2, 2000
Carolyn DeLoach's Shadow Chasers: The Woolfolk Tragedy Revisited is a snapshot of the people and beliefs of the south during the late 1800s. The characters are very well developed and demonstrate our post war culture. Being accused of very gruesome murders, Tom Woolfolk held on and claimed his innocence throughout the ordeal. As the book progresses, you see him grow into a more mature and peaceful young man through his faith and the faith of others, and you witness the determination of many to condemn him to death. Before the end of the book, you feel you personally know the characters. Very moving and thought provoking story and very enjoyable reading.

I just finished Shadow Chasers and can not stop thinking about it. The author did a wonderful job with her character development. Her research into this case was impressive. I went to my local library and got the 1887 microfilm of our newspaper. Sure enough there was a front page article of the murder. Incredible!! It blew me away. Awesome story, awesome book, awesome writer. If you like history or if you like a good southern mystery then this is the book for you.

I have read this book several times. The Woolfolks were my ancestors so I wanted to get some information on my past family history. Before this book I never knew that this had even exsisted. Carolyn...thank you for teaching me about something I knew nothing about.

Carolyn spoke at my library in 2000 and everyone was so impressed that I have been trying to get in touch with her ever since. I would love to hear from you. I can't find any new books by you and was wondering where you are with the movie plans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow Chasers: The Woolfolk Tragedy Revisited, November 24, 2000

This is an incredible book. From the first page until the last I was literally caught up in the story. I felt like I was there. I am astounded that I have never heard of this author, Carolyn DeLoach, or that she has never written anything before. Until you read the book, you can not imagine what I am talking about. She transports you back into a time and place--deep South, 1887 when nine members (including young children) of a popular southern family are slaughtered. You feel it, you see it, you can even smell it. The incredible thing is I had never heard of this murder and I am an avid murder mystery reader. How come Lizzie Borden is so well known and the Woolfolk murders and trials in Georgia is not? Is it because when they realized they hung an innocent man they tried to 'forget'? Shadow Chasers is a true story, well documented and well researched. DeLoach captured the horror, the hysteria, the sadness. I highly recommend it to ALL history buffs and to mystery lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Riveting!, November 10, 2000

Carolyn DeLoach was at the Joice Public Library in Joice, Iowa on Wednesday November 8, 2000. She spoke for 1 1/2 hours and not one of us took a breath. Ms. DeLoach had the actual murder weapon that was used on the nine members of the Woolfolk family along with many other artifacts. She is traveling around the country speaking at public libraries. If you get a chance to hear her...DO! You won't regret it. I am a murder mystery fan and read at least one a week and I consider myself a pretty good judge of them. You will not want to miss this book. It appeals to those of us who are interested in history and in mystery. Not only is the book about the Woolfold tradgedy excellant but so is the story of how Carolyn DeLoach spent 27 years of her life researching this story and the amazing way in which she came upon these discoveries. Thank you, Carolyn DeLoach!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-notch, November 24, 2000
By A Customer
This is a story of something that happened over a hundred years ago and yet I was totally affected by it. As I read it I felt like I was watching a movie. Carolyn DeLoach completely pulled me into the book. She was able to connect my mine's eye with my reader's voice. I could visualize it as I read it. I consider myself a discriminating reader. I hate true crime but even though this is about a murder in Georgia I can not put this book in that genre. I was very impressed with DeLoach's dialogue and her attention to minute details like the weather and the social backdrop of this story. I was impressed with her objectivity. She left it up to me to decide the guilt or innocense of the people involved. I can not imagine the level of dedication she had to commit to complete this project.
