Book Description

March 2001
Perhaps there is no mystery in the universe so monumental as God dying a death of shame to redeem mankind. Can the riches of Calvary ever be fully mined? Can an event that has cast a shadow that reaches as far forward as eternity and as far back as the Garden of Eden ever be fully comprehended? Ray Pritchard, after thirty years of being a Christian and twenty years of pastoring, takes a fresh look at the deeper meaning of the cross. The result is a spiritual torch that will ignite a revival in your soul. In the Shadow of the Cross succeeds in its goal to "lift Him up" so that everyone who chooses to kneel in the shadow of the cross will remember with new appreciation the debt we all owe to the work accomplished on Calvary.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

What is the meaning of the cross? Illinois pastor Pritchard examines its significance from seven perspectives: what it meant to God, to Jesus, to Satan, to the world, to the church, for human sin and in heaven. But all of this comes after Pritchard analyzes a totally different list of seven: the seven sayings of Christ on the cross. These are both fine topics (with the analysis of Jesus' words making for a more original book), but they are in competition here. Lenten readers may wish to do what Pritchard should have done: divide his careful ruminations into two shorter devotionals, using one this Holy Week and one next year.

This review is from: In the Shadow of the Cross: The Deeper Meaning of Calvary (Hardcover)
In a very ready to read style, while still drenched with meaning, Pritchard takes you on two journeys. The first one is quite familiar: the seven says of Christ from the cross. Not knew ground for theological authors, but rich with new insights.

The second trip was the "wide ride" I did not expect but soon realized I needed and will treasure always. Another set of seven points; ones I had never read or even considered before. We are invited to see what the cross meant to God, Jesus, Satan, individuals, the church, the world, and the future.

What a blessing! Read this book; take these journeys. The book will fulfill it title and give you a deeper meaning of Calvary.
