Do you Like a Good Mystery?,
By rw9 (Stony Brook, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shadow Of Destiny (CD-ROM)
Pros:1. Intricate, fascinating story, in which the hero struggles to overcome a dark destiny. Very good handling of the complexities of time travel. Plot twists and surprises. 2. Elaborate end game with impressive cinematic cutscenes. Be sure you trigger all five endings plus at least one Extra ending. 3. The inventory system is easy to use. Figuring out which action to take at any particular time is more of a challenge. Nice 3D graphics and music. Mostly good voice acting. Cons: 1. The keyboard control system is unusually sensitive. You can use the mouse to pan around outdoor locations, but indoors you use only the keyboard. There are plenty of obstacles on the street that bounce you back from your intended path. Bottom Line: An adventure game unlike any other. Somewhat similar to the movie "Ground Hog Day", but with darker themes and a compelling mystery at the game's core.

I can't believe it took me so long to come upon this unusual adventure game. If you enjoy games like Syberia, Longest Journey, Gabriel Knight, Broken Sword, then this is the game for you. With beautiful graphics, you feel 'at home' in all the settings, as our hero Eike tries to figure out how to outwit the forces that want to do him in. No complicated puzzles or combat scenes (don't get this game if that's what you're looking for), but solving mysteries by manipulating objects and events. Not wanting to give too much away, but also wanting to hint at the type of problem-solving you encounter, tying a rope to a rail 100 years ago will not save you, but tying that same rope in the present time will help because it has not been weathered and will be strong enough to support you. And this game is worth the money. Once you finish the game, you realize there are other paths you could have taken for 6 different endings. Each ending is a masterpiece in itself, and well worth going back in the game to change 'fate'. Depending on your game-playing dexterity, this is worth over 30 hours of game time.

Old School Review: Shadow of Destiny,

With all the high tech, plasma screen, Hi-def, 1028 dpi games that are on the market, you have to agree that they all are missing a key feature....Fun. I don't own a 360 and I stop buying PS2 games for that reason. It seems video game companies release a good game once a quarter. Games like Metal Gear and Halo are great games, but those are a given. There are great games on the market that get no press at all. Which brings me to this hidden gem, Shadow of Destiny. Back in my game playing days I worked at game store, which allowed me to borrow games. My co-worker (Bahron) told me what the premise of Shadow of Destiny was about, so I decided to borrow it.
Shadow of Destiny immerses the player into the chilling world of Eike; a man who has been grated the ability to travel back in time to prevent his own murder. Sounds like an easy job. But it's not, each time Eike saves himself, he gets himself killed. Your basic goal is to survive the day and try to get closer to what is killing you. That is the basic premise of the game. While I wasn't playing the game, my friend would play(against my permission). We both ended the games and had entirely different endings. Which is why I love this game so much. Imagine reading the Lord of The Rings and there are 5 different endings. Each one more interesting and different then the other. I feel that we are all people that make different decisions in life. When some might go right, you might go left. This is what games should be about creativity, good stories, and just fun to play. If you by chance run across this game in a used bin, give it a shot. The graphics might be outdated, but it's about game play. Remember that kids!. I give it 8 1/2 food stamps
