This ground-breaking movie is a "must see"! I have seen it several times and each time have had deeper insights into the workings of the shadow in my personal life as well as in our collective life. 1.0 out of 5 stars In all honesty, I could not see the point to this., August 4, 2009
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
I purchase spiritual/self help videos/audio recordings to learn new and helpful information so that I can pass it on to others. I just could not get the point of this video, or perhaps I am well past the information that this video was trying to convey. I asked one of my friends to watch it and she came away with the same bewilderment as myself. It starts out fairly well as it describes what a shadow is. It is the part of us that we try to hide and are ashamed of. It shows how people put on a mask to hide their shadow behavior instead of confronting it and that it could potentially explode and cause very bad behavior. It shows some famous celebrities like Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Paris Hilton, and a few others that wear masks and have had what 'we judge' to be bad behavior. So far, any advice as to what a person could do to constructively change this behavior? This video did not have a good flow. It flashes several statistics of the bad stuff that happens with the shadow such as domestic abuse, murders, etc. Negative info, no help there. How do we make this a learning process and turn it into positive? It shows a happy smiling couple and then all of sudden the man smacks the woman accross the face. (I personally went through 5 years of severe domestic abuse in my younger days.) Any suggestions of how to deal with the shadow effect? I kept expecting some constructive helpful advice of how to deal with the shadow effect of oneself or of others, but just did not see any. Again, I am expecting to use this as a learning/teaching video. Finally, it shows some people that tell of their own shadow feelings. The holocaust survivor lived through the shadow effect of others and is a very beautiful person. Her story is very moving. I failed to see that she had any shadow about her nor any social masks. She did explain how she dealt with the shadow effect that was forced on her and that was very good, but other than that, the video was of very little practical help. There were some very good comments in the movie that were supplied by many great spiritual speakers such as Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson and others. The very end of the video was also confusing. One example is "Father abandoned him when he was a little boy" + "Barack Obama" = "President of the United States" Was being abandoned by his father an example of his shadow? I just did not get it. I suggest getting material from Louise Hay, Katie Byron, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Miguel Ruiz, Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsch, Eckert Tolle, Gary Renard, Esther and Jerry Hicks and skip this one. If you want to stick to DVD format, Louise Hay has "You Can Heal Your Life". It would much more helpful. Love and accept (forgive) yourself in every way and you will naturally love and forgive others. If you can do that, then your shadow effect will be non-existent. I definitely did not get that message from The Shadow Effect Video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, entertaining, and potentially life-altering film, August 18, 2009
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
In The Shadow Effect: Special Interactive Edition, Debbie Ford has created a profound, heartfelt, and thought-provoking movie. Through compelling stories and interviews with an impressive cast of leaders in the field of human transformation, the film educates us about an essential element of our humanity - the Shadow. This stirring film offers us practical, accessible, and even fun exercises to access and work with its tremendous power in order to create the life of our dreams. Eloquent, entertaining, challenging, and insightful, The Shadow Effect: Special Interactive Edition invites us to explore all that we are, the shadow as well as the light, and to embrace and love the magical, complex, powerful, and ultimately beautiful creatures that we are. As a teacher and writer, and as a man, I consider this film and the subject it explores to be among the most important I've encountered. A must-see film for anyone committed to becoming the highest expression of themselves. ~ Tom McLaughlin, Jr., MA

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money, May 19, 2010
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
Sadly, this DVD was a huge disappoint. I expected practical advice and tools to help me recognize and battle my own shadows, but instead I got what felt like an hour-long advertisement for the REAL Shadow Effect DVD, so I half expected the second DVD to be the program...Nope. The video was choppy, not at all cohesive and really didn't make any sense. There were no complete or organized thoughts, just snippets and general comments by some recognizable and well-respected leaders, Marianne Williamson and Deepak Chopra, and by some totally unrecognizable/unrespected others. I expected to be enlightened, but I am still in the DARK and out some money and time. I have to say, I feel as though maybe one of Debbie Ford's shadows is greed! This movie was a money-making scam. Don't buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching once, October 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
I found that the content of this video was not new or different from what I have already read/learned. I was disappointed because I thought that there would be new information or information to help me deal with "the shadow". I do not regret watching it--however, i would have been much happier if i rented it or borrowed it.

For people who are unaware of "the shadow"--this is a great introduction and very user friendly. I would highly, highly recommend it to people just starting out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Open a door for the part that you want to hide., August 25, 2009
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
I enjoyed the movie and the guided work to find a shadow inside you was very helpful. The only thing I would suggest is to include subtitles in other languages, so that more people can benefit from this experience!

3.0 out of 5 stars beginners will not be disappointed; others might, October 3, 2011
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
I recommend this dvd for sharing with people beginning this type of work. I have been on the path of personal growth for some time and found this a big disappointment. The interviews and commentary are interesting, but I actually came away feeling a bit cheated--this felt like one long commercial for a Debbie Ford workshop. It tells you a whole lot about what doing shadow work can do for you, but it gives little to no actual steps to take for uncovering the shadow selves, other than attend one of her workshops. Perhaps the interactive DVD is more satisfying.

1.0 out of 5 stars A shallow Infomercial, don't waste your $ - too bad I can't put Zero Stars!, October 3, 2009
This review is from: The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self, an Interactive Movie Experience (DVD)
I wasted $23 (DVD, S+H) for a shallow infomercial with almost no information, this was just a commercial for Debbie Ford's classes. It is not exactly a revelation that we have a "dark side." Plenty of other new-agy cliches await on the DVD - like you project onto others what you don't like about yourself - WOW - never thought of that! ! And the production was so cheesy; stupid re-enactments and truly overbearing corny music blasting through the entire thing. The music is what made the whole DVD seem somewhat humorous, since every sad story was accompanied by truly corny music, every triumph accompanied be corny triumphant music. The filmmakers knew they had nothing and so they thought they would fool people into thinking they were actually seeing something by putting in really loud self important music. The music attempts to "project" what we are supposed to feel, talk about "projecting! There was nothing to this movie - what a waste, don't waste your money!
