Far from the masterpiece that End of History was. I was disappointed that it differred so greatly from his other work, and hope thta he wil one day return to a style more similar to that.

Conquering an empire!,

Sophomore disc "The shadow of an empire" features 10 ambitious Folk/Rock/Country songs by Irish singer/songwriter Fionn Regan. It follows up his mercury music prize nominated debut "The end of history".
A name that often comes to mind listening to his music is Bob Dylan, especially opening cut "Protection racket" (with lyrics on gangsters and landlords), and "House detective". "Catacombs" is bouncy Rockabilly, while the Blues/Rock "Coat hook" with its starts and stops reminds me of The White Stripes, as does the verbose "Genocide matinee". "Violent demeanour" is a lovely acoustic ballad with interesting tempo shifts, outstanding and my favourite. Also driven by delicately plucked guitar is the gently upbeat "Lines written in winter". "Little Nancy" is an accordion sprinkled ballad, "Lord help my poor soul" a beautiful ballad with forlorn vocals and harmonies, and closing is the title track, a piano ballad that one can imagine being sung along to in a pub. Simple songs with witty and intelligent lyrics, I would think another Mercury nomination is on its way. |
