This is a beautifully written book about doing something special for a loved one when they're sick. The story comes to life in a magical garden filled with beautiful flowers and garden creatures. When we have people in our lives who are sick, sometimes the only thing that helps is something they love. This book is inspiring and the illustrations by the special children are magnificant!! I highly recommend this book to everyone.
We were first drawn to the book by the cover as a gift for our grandson. But what we found after reading it is that it is much more than a well written and animated story for children. It is an authoritative, educational and well documented description of gardening, told in a most creative way that makes it attractive to both children and adults. It is also a fun story with a wholesome theme of a child having fun with his grandparents and serving others in the process. It will inspire people of all ages to learn more about gardening and the joy of serving others. I look forward to reading this book to our grandson many times. And with any luck. he too may learn the joys of doing good deeds for others.
Cherie Colburn's "Our Shadow Garden" sheds light on what is right with the world- our human ability to recognize when others are in desperate need. This children's story is about a young child who recognizes a grandparent's pain when no longer able to garden during the sunny times of the day. The child helps build a special garden that blooms and attracts creatures at night. Not only are the drawings by the special children from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center enchanting and playful, Ms. Colburn's sidebars with educational and fun-filled facts make this a must-have for parents, grandparents, and teachers who want to share with children what is right with the world.
This book is lovingly and beautifully illustrated by the young cancer patients at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The artwork brings the story to life in a very charming way. Flowers, raccoons, wheelbarrows, rows of plants and more all tell the story of gardening with heart. I also love the pages in the back of the book that list each child's name beside their artwork and tell about M. D. Anderson. Great read for parents/grandparents and children together. Enjoy!
