5.0 out of 5 stars Narrative poetry at its best
If you like poetry, but love a good story even more, this book will deliver. The author does a great job of weaving in an interesting, page-turning story while offering beautifully written poetry along the way.

1.0 out of 5 stars stale and lacking ambition
In a work that would seem to require great fortitude to put together, I found this book wholly lacking in its ability to make the historical facts and the language sing to us. This all sounds like a trite stab a poetry from someone who fancies herself an expert on the time period, but in reality is just amusing herself in a way that doesn't amuse many other.

If you like poetry, but love a good story even more, this book will deliver. The author does a great job of weaving in an interesting, page-turning story while offering beautifully written poetry along the way.

I got caught up in the story of the fictional Mary Burbage, who loved William Shakespeare from afar, as well as the host of other memorable characters, both fictional and those based on historical accounts of Shakespeare's life at the The Globe.

Shakespeare lovers will adore this book---a must-have. But even those with only a slight knowledge of Shakespeare's world (that was me before reading the book) will find the story fulfilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, December 22, 2003
This review is from: In the Shadow of the Globe (Paperback)
Michelle Cameron has written a novel/poem that is both a fast-moving story and a narrative poem filled with layers of meaning. Here is the world of Shakespeare, seen through the eyes of historical and fictional characters.

Mary Burbage, Cameron's fictional invention, tells a tale of unrequited love for the Bard himself. This theme forms the backdrop for stories from theater owner, actors, clowns, and apprentices. Most touching to me were the women's voices, including Shakespeare's abandoned wife and Anne Phillips, wife of an actor who must feed and house apprentices.

If you love Elizabethan England, you'll recognize the depth of Cameron's scholarship while you enjoy the lilting beauty of her poetry. If you've never before been a fan of Shakespeare or history, give yourself the treat of reading this book!

Buy this book! It's a gem!

A few years ago I traveled to Stratford-on-Avon, visited Shakespeare's home and the theater. Michelle Cameron has returned me to that place. Her beautifully crafted poetry captured everything I remember and more. The poems touched my soul-sang to me-called my name. Once again, I didn't want to leave this place. Journey with Cameron back to the Elizabethan age--go back to Stratford on Avon -back to the Globe and like me, you'll never want to leave! Everything about this book is memorable...a treasure!

...into the past! Michelle Cameron brings to life an Elizabethan cast of players, and makes them flesh and blood to us, with all their flaws and foibles. Her poetry evokes a range of human emotion, from joy to jealousy, from elation to despair. I highly recommend taking a ride into rich world that Ms. Cameron created - you won't want to leave.
