An Excellent Summary of Intolerance in America,
This review is from: The Shadow of Hate: A History of Intolerance in America
"The Shadow of Hate" is an excellent historical summary of behavior toward culturally different others in U. S. America. I show this video in each "Leadership & Social Justice" class consisting of doctoral students. Most students are ashamed; some are appalled; others sit in disbelief. It makes for excellent discussions. Though it is historical in nature, it points up what is happening currently among us humans. And I say humans because many of us don't know or have thought about what it means to be human. It demonstrate how we treat each other; it hold a mirror in front of us, telling us that we are speaking in 21st Century language; yet, our behavior represents 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries in what we do. Our language does not match our behavior when it comes to interacting with and relating to culturally different others, ethnically different others, religiously different others, or those who simply differ from us.I highly recommend this video in classes about social justice, diversity, leadership, intercultural development, or any class related to helping us understand how we behave toward others who are dissimilar to us, or how we treat those who differ. Finally, I think hate is as much a leadership challenge as it is an educational one; it is definitely a law enforcement issue. |
