Book Description

December 27, 2011 Dark Swan
"New York Times" bestselling author Richelle Mead returns to the Otherworld, a mystic land inextricably linked to our own - and balanced precariously on one woman's desperate courage...Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham strives to keep the mortal realm safe from trespassing entities. But as the Thorn Land's prophecy-haunted queen, there's no refuge for her and her soon-to-be-born children when a mysterious blight begins to devastate the Otherworld...The spell-driven source of the blight isn't the only challenge to Eugenie's instincts. Fairy king Dorian is sacrificing everything to help, but Eugenie can't trust the synergy drawing them back together. The uneasy truce between her and her shape shifter ex-lover Kiyo is endangered by secrets he can't - or won't - reveal. And as a formidable force rises to also threaten the human world, Eugenie must use her own cursed fate as a weapon - and risk the ultimate sacrifice...

1.0 out of 5 stars WAIT, this is the END??? December 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you love this series, and want to know how it ends. Buy the book. You're going to find yourself here writing a hate review later on though about how the author ended things with the series. I wasn't REALLY ticked off until I saw that this was the LAST book in the series. I don't think an author has EVER made me angrier than this one did by ending this series in this way. I will never pick up another book by her. I actually feel betrayed by this book and author. I don't know what else I can say. Below is why:

***This review contains HUGE spoilers, and you may not want to read on.***

Ok. It would SHOCK me if this author were a mother. There's no way any real mother could make the choices Eug had to make the way she did. NO WAY. That's the first thing that ticked me off. ***HUGE SPOILER ALERT*** Um. What REAL mother could leave her newborn twins in the NICU weeks after they were born early, for MONTHS on end to save the "Other" world??? Babies STILL IN the NICU people. Seriously. NOT gonna happen. In the LAST FEW pages, we find out that Dorian is the real baby daddy. And Eug decides to NOT tell him, ever???? But still love and be with him as a couple? "Oh, by the way...I am never telling you where the babies are, cause even though the BIG threat is over, they still MIGHT not be safe. So I'm just gonna leave them ALL THE TIME, and come here for months on end while I take care of my kingdoms and be your lover. Hope you can live with that. Luv ya babe!" She made this HUGE to-do about not being able to trust Dorian through the entire series...in the end, the joke was on HIM.

If I could rate this book NEGATIVE stars, I think I would.

3.0 out of 5 stars Terrible ending ruins book December 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read this series from the beginning and loved it. I had this book on autobuy and read it the day it came out. The story starts out strong. It continues on from the previous book and with eugenie pregnant and gentry trying to kill her. However, the next part of the book just meanders as she deals with the pregnancy. The story picks up again when she goes back to the otherworld to deal with the blight (mentioned in the book summary). This was a strong portion of the book. Then, the last 10 to 15 percent of the book just ruins everything. We find out several shocking things that are completely out of the blue and which make no sense. The book ends with no real closure and Eugenie living a lie.

This is the ending to the series and Eugenie and her poor decision-making were not worth my time. The decisions she makes at the end are the most poorly thought out decisions and unforgiveable. Additionally, several of the things that happen at the end seem contrived and just meant to help wrap things up. AND, after she makes a horrible decision at the end, she then implies "well, I plan on handling it this way but Dorian may change my mind". WHAT KIND OF ENDING IS THIS???? I am gving this 3 stars mainly for the 1st and 3rd parts of the book which take place in the otherworld. The second part dealing with her pregnancy was a distraction and the 4th part wrapping things up after the blight was just bad. If you want to read to finish up the series, save your money and borrow from the library.

I'm absolutely disappointed with this book. I feel sort of betrayed that Richelle would choose to end it they way that she did. An ending like that would be enough for me to drop an author altogether and the only reason I won't is because I'm way too invested in her VA world to drop Bloodlines.
This is strike two against Richelle's end of series. The way LS ended was sort of disappointing but there was the excuse that things would be explained later in the spin-off. I don't fail to see the irony that her most successful end of series was with Succubus and that series wasn't even great in my opinion.
It is Richelle's style to make her heroines with flaws. I get that and I accept it, even though they make me cringe and roll my eyes several times. What I don't get is building an expectation like Richelle did in Iron Crowned to just divert the story to a totally different direction. If you are expecting a confrontation between Eugenie and Kiyo, or any real confrontation involving Eugenie, Dorian, Kiyo, and Mayween, well, sorry to disappoint but it doesn't happen.
What you will see is Eugenie in yet another quest to defeat a bad guy that honestly, I didn't care about. The entire book felt like a filler and the matter that everyone really wanted to see resolved only got addressed at the end of it and I have to say, it was lacking. Okay, there were a couple interesting twists that I didn't see coming but they weren't enough to save the book. And the ending was so ridiculous and senseless that I can only assume Richelle wrote the book while pregnant and the hormones addled her brains.
If you hadn't started this series, I seriously advice you to stay away. Don't waste your time and money because you will just end up feeling like me, completely pissed off.

Even if the author were to write a follow-up book, I probably would not read it because the suggested future events could not be resolved in any positive way. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars The ending is a disappointment!
I hate that Eug didn't tell Dorian he's the Father. Richelle left that open, maybe for the fact that she may continue the series. But Dorian deserves to know. Read more

I agree. While reading shadow heir I was a little irritated about how Eugenie kept reminding Dorian of his betrayal and how she doesn't trust him anymore but all I kept thinking was that before she even confirmed Dorian's ulterior motives, she had sex with kiyo! What I expected to see in the last... Read more

That would be nice. I don't think Kiyo has many fans.
