Book Description

September 2003
Darkness is escaping!

The village of Harrowdown sits under the shadow of the tower of Deephallow where a desperate old mageborn seeks to keep the powers of darkness at bay. But Marroc is weakening with the passage of years, and the shadow demons are slipping out of their prison in greater numbers than he can counter. Soon, he fears the ancient evil imprisoned at the heart of the tower will escape as well.

Conor Mac Manahan, his healer wife and their adopted son Rhoyd stop in Harrowdown just to spend the night. But when Rhoyd destroys one of the shadow demons, Marroc believes that his salvation is at hand. He realizes that he must first separate young Rhoyd from the family he loves. So in desperation, the old wizard kidnaps the boy...

...And sets in motion a series of terrible events that could mean death to all who live in Harrowdown...

Review

The world [Underwood] has created is both wondrous and brutally real, and it is inhabited by living, breathing, compelling people. -- David B. Coe, author of The LonTobyn Chronicle and Winds of the Forelands

So if you want to know what happened to Alaric Braidwine, read WANDERING LARK (2010) from Yard Dog Press.

When not writing, Laura works for the Knox County Public Library System where she is First Assistant at the Carter Branch, hikes her native Appalachian mountains, plays a harp with the head of a unicorn and occasionally fences with the SFWA Musketeers. She lives in East Tennessee with her parents and a pernicious feline of few grey cells who frequently forgets that windows do have glass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Novella!, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Shadow Lord (Paperback)
If you're curious about Laura Underwood's writing and don't necessarily want to spring for a novel, check this chapbook out. This is a fun story with Rhoyd, Conor and Eithne, characters who are in Ard Magister and Chronicles of the Last War, but you certain don't need to read those to enjoy this story. It's good versus evil and young Rhoyd is expected to hold the demons back -- only that's not his job!

This is a great book for anyone who wants a fun and enjoyable read.
