5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant read..., August 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
What saddened me about the reviewer who gave this book two stars was that she had more time to edit than appreciate. That showed me she had no need for intellectual entertainment. Rather she should try a device to reduce tension other than books. I will make no suggestions but I'm sure there are many. Merely correcting grammatical errors does not make one an authority. Thrillers are about immersion. I think the author, Hope C. Clarke, did a great job immersing you in her world. Regardless of typographical errors this book was a great read. I think it has an attitude and quality that's right for the market. Maybe that reviewer can proof read one of the books next time and ensure that such brilliant works are error-free. However, if you can't see past those minor errors, get a life.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to read this book !!!, March 28, 2001
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
There is so much that can be said for Shadow Lover ....

This was a different read for me but I must say I loved it !!!!! It wasn't a realistic story especially the idea of a doctor falling in love with a battered woman, the wife of another man .Love at first sight? She was almost dead when the doctor saw her . I found that hard to believe. Compassionate yes. However this is a story not to be missed .Irvan was a crazey killer on the loose he was murdering any one he felt getting in his way .He was a control freak .I agree with one of the previous readers . Shadow Lover is an amazing story in a class by itself ! It proved that the shadow man is going to get you ! Irvan certainly got his ! This was , an amazing, entertaining, unbelievable and very good read ! I love the way the author put so much eroticism in her sex scenes . They were very steamy, at times I had to just put the book down . Then go back when I'd stop fanning ! ^5 to you Hope and please keep those scenes coming in the next books ! I will be waiting at the bookstores or computer for you next books! Thanks for a job well done ! If you have read the reviews posted on this book don't hesistant get it now ! Another 4.5 * read less than 5* but certainly more than 4* !

5.0 out of 5 stars A Man's Quest for Control, August 9, 2000
By
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Shadow Lover is a very well written book. Great for battered women. If you're blaming yourself, stop and read this book. It will make you change your mind.

Ivan thrives on control and will stop at nothing to win it all. Angelica, a sweet and beautiful woman, made the wrong choice of marrying this man; therefore, she and everyone else who gets involved will have to pay the consequences.

Hope does an exceptional job on describing the means Ivan takes to satisfy his hunger for control. He's always one step ahead of everyone, but he doesn't anticipate Angelica's departure. Watch the suspense grow. You will be on edge. Seems so real!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just when you think it can't get any wilder, January 9, 2003
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Man! Hope Clarke's tale of fatal attraction was a roller coaster of a ride. Just when I thought the situations couldn't get any more twisted and vivid, I was shocked when they did. The story focuses around a DR. (Dr. Painkin) who falls in love with on of his patients (Angelica) that he meets after she is beaten by her husband. The action picks up when Ivan (her husband) will stop at nothing (AND I MEAN NOTHING) to get her back. I won't spoil the ending for you.....This is a first rate thriller by Hope C. Clarke. I look forward to reading more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerously Delicious, August 21, 2002
By
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
I had the pleasure of meeting Hope C. Clarke at the Harlem Book Fair this year and I must say, she's got it going on. Gorgeous woman and very approachable. I finally got around to reading Shadow Lover and the book is hot!!! I don't know if the girl writes erotica, mystery, horror or romance because she touched it all. Ivan Carty was brutal and sexy - what a combination! I would not have believed it possible to create such characterization. Her story line is tight too. She creates mini stories that are all linked together in the end and Ivan is tied into all of them.

The girl is dangerously sexy and her writing is entertaining too. This is a must read - take it from a man who only reads non-fiction. I'm converted!!! I'm looking forward to reading Pent Up Passion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed, December 3, 2000
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Reading Shadow Lover was like watching an exciting gothic action movie. HC Clark coats your mind with intrigue, murder, sex, love, and anxiety throughout the novel. This undaunted tale of anguish had me sitting on the edge of my seat during the entire read.

Ivan Carty is the narcissistic lunatic, crazed and brutal who wreaks havoc on anyone in his path. This deranged character is so thoroughly developed. Angelica is Ivan's beautiful timid wife who is ferociously plagued by Ivan's menacing mind and brutal hand. Consequently, Angelica has nine lives and someone or something is watching over her. Will Angelica escape from the cunning vigilance of her husband or the emotional hailstorms that penetrate her mind?

I loved how well Hope C. Clark developed the characters in Shadow Lover. The developed characters intermingled with the action packed storyline is what makes this novel such a good read. The characters' actions and dialogue coincide with who they are, so you won't question the validity of the bizarre occurrences. Hope's writing is diligent and detail oriented. Every detail is covered.

There is never a dull moment in this morbid, yet exciting tale. So set aside enough reading time, because once you start Shadow Lover, you won't dare put it down until your eyes glaze over the very last word. You'll worry about Angelica until you know that she's gone or saved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Choices and Conclusions, March 8, 2000
By
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Shadow Lover is about the choices we make and how far we are willing to go to protect and enforce what we believe. Dr. Painkin experiences an unusual desire to protect a woman patient who is brought to the hospital requiring emergency surgery. All odds are against her. She has cerebral bleeding and a hematoma which is relentlessly squeezing her brain. Dr. Painkin along with his skilled staff realizes that their efforts are futile but a miracle happens...and the woman's life is saved. Now the doctor has to choose between ignoring the fact that a miracle has occured and allow this woman to return to the merciless hands of her husband or cross the lines of professionalism to protect her at whatever cost. There's a missing wife and an angry husband who will do anything it takes to get his wife back. Battered women you will love this one. If you think there is no way out, you want to read this one. Hope Clarke hits the nail on the head with this one. Tell your friends about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., October 20, 2003

Lauren Edwards (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Let me start off by saying that the idea and plot for this novel is very creative. Written well it could've even been a really descend movie. However the novel wasn't written well at all. In fact, the only thing good about this book was the creative idea.

I think you'll agree that character development is one of the most important elements in a book. That's what makes most books stand out from the rest. Good, developed characters. Wasn't happening here. They just weren't developed at all. They were unrealistic and too perfect. Here's an example: The romance between Angelica and Steve wasn't believable. They practically fell in love after a couple of chapters without even knowing each other. Another example... the shadowy figure character that shows up 3 times (with which the book is named after) has nothing to do with the story at all.

I don't think I'm being mean here. As a reader, who goes out and invests time and money into your work, you expect to read a novel that's developed, free of spelling and grammar mistakes, and somewhat believable.

I'm mad because this really could have been an excellent novel. I searched high and low for this book, finally found it, and became so disappointed after reading. I don't recommend this book because if you're someone whose looking for good suspense, thriller, and mystery you, unfortunately, won't find it here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insomnia, August 21, 2002
This review is from: Shadow Lover (Paperback)
Hope C Clarke is an excellent writer who coates the mind with intrigue and suspense. She delivers strong characters that are never predictable and neither are her plots. In my opinion, she is the best of the best. I could not put Shadow Lover down. I started reading it at 6:15, just after work, and I did not put that book down until I finished it at 4:45 the next morning. I like the way she weaved in the mysterious shadow in this horrific tale of a battered woman's quest to get away from her derranged husband. You never know when he will pop up, but he is there lurking in the shadows and in this book, the bad guy gets his royally. I would give it 10 stars, but I was limited to 5. this definitely deserves the big screen. I read Pent Up Passion and Best Seller too and Hope Clarke is wicked with the pen. Her short stories are no joke either. Check them out at [URL] people, she updates them every 3 months.
