Product Description

Editorial Review

Shadow Man, based on the Acclaim Comics series of the same name, lurks onto the Nintendo 64 platform with an unusually massive, in-depth, and graphically intense experience for fans of creepier gaming experiences. This single-player, third-person 3-D action adventure packs a well-scripted story, massive nonlinear levels, intuitive player controls, and wonderfully horrific graphics.

Players assume the role of Shadow Man, an immortal voodoo warrior who wanders the Deadside, a mix of grand gothic architecture melded into a fleshy landscape. Seems that some of the otherworldly forces are determined to bring about Armageddon up on Earth and, naturally, it's up to Shadow Man to hunt down the undead culprits. The majority of the game focuses on negotiating physical challenges, such as jumping over ravines and swimming through caverns, defeating a variety of enemies, activating buttons and levers that allow access to new areas, and then repeating the process in a new level. Redundant? Not at all. Well-designed levels encourage players to keep driving through the game, and enemies inherently surprise the player when least expected. This is a long game, requiring up to 70 hours to complete, but those prepared for an intense gaming experience will enjoy the journey. --Eric Twelker

Pros:

  • A truly massive game requiring 70 hours to complete
  • Engrossing mystery storyline
  • Well-designed, nonlinear levels
Cons:
  • Player occasionally gets stuck behind objects or in walls
  • Enemy artificial intelligence sometimes glitchy

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ADULT ADVENTURE THAT'S NOT FOR CHILDREN!, November 16, 1999

It's about time that the good ol' folks at Nintendo allowedadults to have fun for a change. See you later Mario, Yoshi, andPrincess Peach...it's time to enter the world of real adult gaming. Definitely a cerebral game, Shadow Man will have you thinking and thinking and thinking for a long time. Beautiful graphics, great sound effects, hours of real speech, loads of puzzles, and some truly horrendous and disgusting enemies. How they manage to pack so much stuff into a cartridge is a small miracle. In any case, this game will captivate you for hours. As someone else mentioned, the learning curve on this is quite steep, so I recommend getting a hint book (trust me, you will need one). The overall atmosphere of the game is very tense, spooky, and nightmarish. Enemies jumping out of nowhere will surprise and scare you. This is not a game to be played in the dark on a stormy night. It's like playing a horror movie. On a final note, the box disclaimer is accurate: THIS GAME IS NOT FOR CHILDREN! The settings are disturbing, there is extreme violence and torture, some characters (the serial killers) are downright sadistic in their attempts to kill you, there is adult language, and the themes of death and voodoo rituals occur throughout the game. It's nice to see an intelligent game marketed to adults. Let's hope more follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars The scariest and bloodiest game since "Resident Evil", April 21, 2000
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shadow Man (Game Cartridge)
Okay, first off for the parents, I wouldn't recommend letting your kids play this game. It is really disturbing, violent, and for more mature audiences.

Graphics: Pretty close to flawless. The mouth motion doesn't match up to what the characters are really saying. Gameplay graphics are the best part. Though, they can get pretty intense sometimes.

Overall Graphics Grade: A-

Play Control: It's sometimes hard to control the main character and it'll take you a few minutes to get used to the controls.

Overall Play Control Grade: B

Game Design: The storyline is that of a B-movie. The worlds are very well created and structured. Although, you'd probably get scared to death playing it. I told my father about the game and he was scared just hearing about it.

Overall Game Design Grade: A+

Sound: You'll play it and say, "Did I hear what I think I heard?" The sound is very realistic, from all the dialogue, gunfire, and ceatures bursting into a pool of gore, you'd think you were watching a movie.

Overall Sound Grade: A+

General Comments: Excellent game. Very disturbing and not at all for pre-teens. Be prepared for nightmares.

ESRB Rating: M containing animated violence and animated blood & gore. As I've already said, the game is very gory with much disenbowlment (excuse the spelling) and shooting. The game also contains fairly strong language.

5.0 out of 5 stars With such a cheap price, this is a MUST HAVE for N64 users, August 2, 2000

Amazon.com is now selling it ........ & everything, say you pay ..... And let's say you are so good & it only takes you 40 hours to finish the game. That's a buck an hour on the game. Try taking a buck to a local arcade & see how long you can last! Besides, I really don't think anyone of you could finish it in 40 hours. I bought it 2 weeks ago & I have been on it for about 2 hours a day. I am only about 80% done. What I am really trying to say is " IT'S A GREAT DEAL! " It is the content of the game that stirred my interest. I fell in love with it the first time I turned it on. Graphics were excellent. The monsters & creatures were creative but realistic. Sounds were so real in some area you will think you are in it. Nintendo should have more of these type of game to capture audience like me. I am getting really sick & tired of those Super Mario & Banjo kiddie game. Acclaim, who is the creator of this game, should also take full credit of this. I will even throw in this if you choose to buy the game. Go to www.gamesages.com & get the tips & cheats on this game. This would make your life a lot easier. This guy nicknamed marshmellow wrote about 60 pages of tips on this game. Give it a try. You won't regret it. For about $30.00, you've got nothing to lose. You will thank me for recommending this to you! Enjoy! Edwin
