Book Description

February 5, 2004
Alan Gibbons takes us into Greek mythology in most exciting way with a powerful novel about a present-day boy, Phoenix, the son of a computer geek who creates a virtual reality game that gets a bit too real. In playing the game, Phoenix becomes Theseus pursued by the Minotaur, becomes Perseus and confronts the Gorgon, and goes down into the Underworld with Orpheus. His terrifying adventures are interwoven with the difficult reality of his life at home and at his new school. As always, Alan Gibbons writes with extraordinary understanding about contemporary children - but this time moves on to an action-packed and thrillingly dangerous story of fantasy worlds.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-In Shadow of the Minotaur, the first title in Alan Gibbons Legendeer trilogy, the 13-year-old hero, Phoenix, is drawn into the virtual reality computer game of Greek mythology created by his father. The descriptive passages come alive and create a visual landscape of ancient Greece. The gritty, realistic images are a result of Gibbon's writing and British narrator Jamie Glover's inflections. As Phoenix winds his way through the labyrinth to face the Minotaur, his fear is palpable. Glover's dramatic reading is so enthusiastic that listeners are immediately drawn into the urgency of the storyline. American listeners may be momentary puzzled by the meaning of a few British expressions, such as "wasteland," and "not a dickey-bird," but the suspenseful story makes this a minor drawback. The graphic description of Theseus as he comes upon victims of the Minotaur and vocalizations for Medusa and her sisters when Perseus battles with them are intense. This excellent audiobook will entice those who enjoy Greek mythology or computer gaming.

My 9yo son is reading this series. I bought it for him because he over the top loves the Percy Jackson series and other Rick Riordan books and now loves all things mythology. He said he really enjoyed this book but said it is much scarier than the Percy Jackson books but not so scary that he did not finish and he is reading the 2nd book. I did not read it yet myself.
