3.0 out of 5 stars A family reunion but not much fun.
Very little actual story. Too much back story on too many minor characters. York spends most of the book on S&M scenes and doesn't really allow Savannah and Lance's relationship to really bloom. She relies heavily on the fact that if you've read all her werewolf stories you already know that being a Marshall cousin makes Lance sexy, caring, and instantly in love with...

4.0 out of 5 stars Steamy, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Savannah Carpenter is an artist, but painting is definitely not currently on her mind. Savannah is trying to understand what happened to her sister, Charlotte. Charlotte is in a coma and Savannah is at her bed side every moment she is allowed by the hospital staff. Charlotte had been found in Rock Creek Park. Some say she fell off an outcropping of rocks. Others say she tried to kill herself. But Savannah cannot help but wonder if someone pushed her over the cliff. Savannah's only real clues were some matchbook covers from the Eighteenth Club and Charlotte's journal. Even though Savannah knows she should not read the diary, she consoled herself with the fact that she was searching for clues. In truth, it was the steamy content that enthralled her. She had no idea Charlotte was into such fantasies or that the Eighteenth Club let people act those dark desires out.

Lance Marshall is a werewolf. Being able to shift into canine form has helped him get stories that other journalists could not. After all, a big stray dog could not understand English, right? Lance was currently interested in the Eighteenth Club and its owner, Raymond Conrad. However, while scoping out the club he spies Savannah sneaking about, taking pictures of the top brass entering the establishment. Risky! Especially since some who enter the club never exit alive. He ends up rescuing her from a guard and then begins hunting her for his own reasons.

**** This is a steamy paranormal romance. If you do not like explicit bedroom scenes and hot fantasies, stay away. If you love those scenes (or could care less if they are there or not), then this is right up your alley. The author gives her readers danger, shape-shifters, and hot romance. The best of everything. Brava. ****

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything but the kitchen sink--is it really necessary?, June 9, 2006
By
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
This author writes a strong series of paranormal books dealing with werewolves, but more importantly the relationships these creatures have with each other and their mates. Each book stands alone and this is one of the weaker ones in the series. It's mostlybecause we got a whole lotta--stuff--tucked into one little story. A great love story with two strong interesting leads, plus good secondary love story with folks you grow to care about then add the arrival of the families from the other books and that could be enough. Let's add another layer with the disappearance of a beloved sister, then the discovery of a secret sex club, plus the training of each lead in a little lite BDSM, and finally throw in a paranormal villian from--I don't know-- a parallel dimension who has telepathic powers and feeds off strong human emotions? It works out OK and I did learn a new use for plastic wrap other than preserving last night's dinner but it felt messy. Don't hurry on this one--it's just OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent paranormal romantic suspense, June 7, 2006
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
The DC police inform artist Savannah Carpenter that they believe her sister Charlotte accidentally fell off rocks at Rock Creek Park leading to her being at George Washington University Hospital in a coma. Savannah thinks otherwise as she feels someone pushed her sibling who was looking into strange happenings at Club Eighteen better known as the Castle by its rich S&M patrons.

When the Castle's guards see Savannah taking photos of their clients, they go after her, but a large wolf rescues her. Investigative reporter Lance Marshall offers to team up with Savannah as he senses a story that could help her learn what happened to Charlotte. She agrees. They enter the club albeit to have fun, but also to obtain the truth. However, like the Hotel California it is easy to enter, but impossible to leave.

The York werewolf moon novels contains several excellent paranormal romantic suspense tales (see CRIMSON MOON), but SHADOW OF THE MOON may be the best of the series so far. The action-packed story line is fast-paced and filled with sexual tension accentuated by the danger that the audience will taste as if we have the enhanced sense of a werewolf. The lead couple is a delightful pairing as they investigate the goings on at the club, what happened to Charlotte, and the attraction between them in a gripping thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it !, August 22, 2006
By
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Rebecca York, is one of my favorite werewolves series writer. She had the talent to make me get into the stories and make it work. Her characters are always likeable. With promises of excitement, mystery and romance....York is so much worth it IMO.

Shadow of the Moon is the latest "Moon" werewolves series. The book grabbed me from the first page and I never put it down. It was wonderfully exciting and very steamy, sensual, with some explcit scenes. The book added dimension to the story which was what made the story great! The tension between Savannah and Lance, was sizzle. I really enjoyed seeing the Marshalls' brothers and their wives again; including the cousins. I love to see old characters making appearance...hence the reason I love series books <grin>. there also second characters couple that are likeable too. And it look like the next book going to continue off where we met Rinna's world :)YAY!

I love the werewolves "Moon" series. And I think you won't be disappointed in it. It's a worthy read! Do yourself a favor and go read Rebecca York books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series but still worth reading...., June 20, 2006
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Savannah Carpenter is determined to find out the truth behind her sister's accident- an accident that has left her sister in a coma. Her investigation leads her to the Eighteen Club and the Castle where a wolf rescues her from one of the guards. Little does she realize initially, but the wolf is investigative reporter Lance Marshall, a werewolf.

Lance convinces Savannah to team up with him to find out what is really going on at the Eighteen Club. Their search leads them places neither expected to go as the mystery behind the Castle and the creepy Boralas is finally revealed.

SHADOW OF THE MOON is a bit of a departure from the rest of the series. Rebecca York focuses more on the sensual than on the issues surrounding the werewolves. In fact, Savannah shows almost no reaction when Lance's status is revealed to her. However, the entire werewolf clan are a part of the book and are imperative to defeating Boralas.

SHADOW OF THE MOON is perhaps this reviewer's least favorite in the series. The introduction of the portals and the ensuing tracking of Boralas by Rinni was an intriguing twist. However, it wasn't very well-developed and almost seemed superfluous.

Rebecca York is a talented writer and even her weaker efforts exceed what many others can do. SHADOW OF THE MOON is not the best book in the series but is still well worth reading. Fans of the series may wonder as to what direction Ms. York is taking the series but will not regret reading SHADOW OF THE MOON.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexually stimulating and a suspenseful story to read!, March 8, 2008
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
It wasn't quite the werewolf-related romance novel I had in mind, but it was a real delight to read with lots of delicious sensual situations. Not the book for the least-bit prude or easily offended by S&M/bondage material, but for those tolerant it's a nice book to take to bed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex and intrigue - a great combination, September 23, 2007
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sex, romance and intrigue.

If you are a fan of Rebecca's books, this one should blow you over. Secret sex clubs where they fulfill your every desire, a reporter who knows how to find the dirty deeds and a woman who wants to know what happened to her sister. Three ingredients for a great book.

It's the fifth in the Moon books and very sexy. It is also the first book to touch on the next series Ms. York is working towards involving a parallel world. Great reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than I Expected, June 27, 2006
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
I must be honest and tell you that upon first examining this book to determine whether or not it would be of any interest to me, I almost put it back on it's shelf. However, once I started reading it became so compelling I couldn't put it back down! The characters instantly sprang to life and drew me into their twisted world of mayhem. I absolutely adore Lance and am so happy he finally found his "life mate" Savannah who desperately deserved the love and affection he and his family came to shower her with. This pack of wolves claims to not get along yet they were all able to pull together for one power packed conclusion. There are some strange eccentricities taking place at The Castle and you won't believe what people of such high power and wealth are able to obtain with their memberships at this club. This odd turn of events is what brings Kevin and Erica together. The probing sexual bond between them escalates into a lasting relationship despite their age differences and the intense circumstances they are forced to undergo. Charlotte enables us to experience first hand the hardships that can tear sisters apart but are you going to believe everything people tell you or have the heart to dig deep enough to discover the truth for yourself no matter what the consequences? Conrad finally gets a grip of his senses and helps to put an end to Boralas's feeding frenzy and put him in his place once and for all. But it is too late? I can't wait to read another of Rebecca York's suspenseful novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebecca York Justs Gets Better and Better, June 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been reading Rebecca York's romances for at least 20 years -- and for one reason: she really does just get better and better.
Rebecca York is not a franchise romance writer. You don't drive into her McDonald's and get the same Big Mac every time. This can be unsettling, yes? or maybe perhaps it can be invigorating and challenging and transformative --
I love it that Rebecca York's couples continue to evolve and to evolve one another -- pushing the envelope. Where did I read that her dad was an insightful Washington psychiatrist? AS a psych major -- I need more than just hot bodies -- I really need to watch minds in action and sensibilities and people who surprise me with their nuances and courage to grow and take a risk.
Rebecca York has taken the werewolf far beyond its origins. In her Moon Series, the wolf becomes a compellingly mesmerizing shadow self of the male protagonist which enables the lovers to experiment with self knowledge and insight and their own range of emotions in playful and thoughtful and sensually expansive ways.
So I grow along with Rebecca York and my life takes on new possibilities --
that's why I keep reading...after all these years.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, December 1, 2008
This review is from: Shadow of the Moon (The Moon Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lance Marshall and Savannah Carpenter first meet outside a sex club in D.C., although Savannah doesn't realize it. Savannah is an artist who was looking for information about her sister who's in a coma after what the police tell her was an accidental fall from a cliff. She's caught by the security guards, but rescued by Lance... in wolf form.

Lance is a werewolf, and an investigative reporter. He's heard some stories about the club and is checking it out to write an exposé.

Turns out the basement of the club houses a portal to another dimension, and a being from that dimension that feeds on and affects human emotions, which makes the club such a success--it influences them to act on their deepest, darkest desires.

With the help of a client and an employee of the club, and several members of the Marshall clan, they solve the mystery and save themselves, and fall in love along the way.

I'm always impressed with the variety Rebecca York brings to this series. Lance's career as an investigative reporter is a good example--it's a natural choice for a werewolf, but not one you see all that often.

The existence of other dimensions has already been introduced in this series, back in Edge of the Moon, so it comes as no surprise, though this dimension is different from the previous one... or at least the creature is different. There's an intriguing peek at life inside that dimension, and a woman, Rinna, who hunts those creatures. I'm hoping assured that she'll be featured in a future story.
