You have to hate when your 1st review vanishes off the computer!! (It was better than this one, but I don't have the energy to recreate it.) If I didn't like the book so much, I would probably be tempted not to write another review.

Did I mention that I really, really liked this book? If possible I would give it a 4.25-star rating. Because it was different than most historical novels currently marketed, it was a breath of fresh air. The Amazon description accurately portrays the journey to come.

The author gives us a smooth-flowing storyline that makes for a quick, easy read. Though elements were predictable, they were in no way a distraction. The descriptions were enough to fully visualize your surroundings, without being so lengthy they bored you to tears. Additionally, the main characters were developed well enough that you either loved them or hated them.

Keluk is a young hunter whose village is brutally attacked by a neighboring one intent on flexing its muscle. Vengeance requires that he kidnap a member of the attacking village to be offered as a blood sacrifice in his own. Ultimately, he chooses the woman he feels will cause the most heartache. He chooses the daughter of the man he holds responsible, the village leader.

Nura, the village leader's daughter, has a peaceful, kind demeanor that has the power to change hearts. Unfortunately for her, as in real-life, these individuals often become the target of others seeking power.

Sarik is the warrior responsible for the deadly strike against Keluk's village. The knave has ambitions and methods that make your skin crawl. He becomes the villain that you love to hate.

There is a bit of female nudity and an attempted rape.

I have read several books now by Quinney. She does a great job helping the reader feel the emotions of her characters. I love the ancient setting. These books remind me of Ayla and the Cave Bear Series.

This book is one of the rare gems that can only be found once in a blue moon! This is the kind of read that you fall into wholeheartedly, and find your emotions and mind fully connecting with every character and the entire world that they live in. I can't wait to continue reading more from this author. I don't normally write reviews, but by the end of the story, I knew that I had to TELL MORE PEOPLE to read this book!
My favorite things- character development, strong plot, and the author uses such vivid description, you will be able to see and feel what you are reading. Enjoy!

Like another reader, I found Karah Quinney's writing style similar to Jean Auel's - Clan of the Cave Bear series. I have worked with Native People for ten years in a health care setting. Her narrative is correct regarding when to not mention a name of a person who walks the Spirit World. While Anglo's will rarely ever fully understand or appreciate the Native culture, writers of this caliber help to fill information gaps with an interesting story that is difficult to put down. This particular writing has the notion of Alaska Natives. I am not familiar with their culture, but I have little doubt that it is close. I would appreciate a Native Americans or Alaska Natives narrative but that is not in their nature to speak of themselves. Writers such as Quinney and Auel are as close as we can get...unless you are fortunate enough to befriend a native....!

Story line was ok, but the writer has a tendency of repeating discriptions and the feelings of the characters, it could be alittle more exciting as well.
