Editorial Reviews

Review

Shadow On My Soul: Overcoming Addiction To Suicide is a landmark book describing how it feels to be suicidal. It "gets inside the mind" of a suicidal person and portrays and examines the evolution of the author's suicidal nature. This remarkable account is a journey from self-hatred and alienation to healing, strength and wholeness. Suffering through half a lifetime of depression and suicide attempts, Paula Quinn tires one last time to confront the beast that has stalked her since early childhood. This time she takes courage and faces the sexual, emotional and physical abuse, the family secrets, the behaviors and attitudes that are destroying her in mind, body and spirit. Learning new ways of thinking and live, Quinn slays the beast. As a trained journalist, Quinn tells her compelling story simply and honestly. Shadow On My Soul is a rare and uplifting book that reveals the road to freedom from depression and obsessive thoughts of suicide. Those who seek to understand and mend their own suffering will find themselves transformed and healed by this book. With more than 100,000 people in the U. S. killing themselves annually, and with the suicide rate among 15-34 year olds tripling in the last 30 years, Shadow On My Soul is a "must have" acquisition recommendation for every school and community library throughout the country. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Much to learn from Quinn, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Shadow on My Soul: Overcoming Addiction to Suicide (Paperback)
I was fortunate enough to have Paula Quinn as a professor in 2004 and this book does not even begin to cover all one can learn from her. As someone who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001 though this book showed let me know it was possible to own my illness and not be a victim. I recommend this book for anyone who needs to understand someone with depression or bipolar disorder, as well as those who are looking for away to understand themselves better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow On My Soul, Overcoming Addiction To Suicide., October 28, 2001

From the standpoint of a Psych RN this book gives great insight into the mindset of a suicidal patient. It has been helpful in my own work with the depressed. Ms. Quinn's unique and simple style of writing make it a pleasure to read. Her delicate way of handling the subject of child sexual and emotional abuse make this a little easier to read. The account of her life give the notion that there is hope in overcoming the addiction to suicide. I highly rcommend this book to anyone who has experienced this type of abuse or to those who work with the abused.

4.0 out of 5 stars helped me, January 29, 2012

Although this book was not what I expected, it helped me in my depression. The short segments of the authors life experiences showed me her journey into depression. It also encouraged me to go deeper in my own life and try to find out how my own relationships were when I was younger. Her own experience with getting help inspires me to keep trying, one day of "good" is only the beginning of our healing.
