Product Description

Thirty eight year old Jade Danner loves her job appraising all manner of unusual antiques for the small coastal New England firm of Remerick and Company. That is, until the day she is asked to appraise a strangely unsettling jewelry case for the Lawrences, a prominent New England family. On the underside of the case, Jade discovers a hidden compartment, which contains a partially legible note written more than 100 years ago. The note leads Jade to the body of Erin, a slain family servant, entombed for decades behind a library wall in the Lawrence family home.

After finding and reading Erin's diary, Jade realizes that Erin had unwittingly uncovered a serial killer, at work in 1870's Portland Maine. And this information had cost Erin her life. Jade resolves to continue Erin's quest, even after it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep the past buried. Jade learns of an intriguing connection between the killer’s victims; they were found with a Möbius symbol on or near them. Jade then discovers that this symbol has been linked with deaths spanning a seemingly impossible 150 years.

In the course of her quest, the line between hunter and hunted blurs, and Jade discovers the horrific secret which the Lawrence family has repeatedly killed to keep. A modern-day serial killer tries desperately to keep Jade from unearthing the past, then works with cunning determination to keep her from living long enough to reveal what she has discovered.

Before all was said and done, Jade’s journey to the truth would cost the lives of people close to her, and would force her to confront some very personal demons from her own past.

I purchased this book because the title sounded interesting and I enjoy mysteries. It kept me guessing through the whole thing. Just when I thought I had figured it out there would be a surprising twist. I use to live in Maine and remember the old port section of Portland. They were good memories and this book brought me back to them. The author is new but I hope to read more from her. Any mystery fan will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling mystery book right up until the end!, March 24, 2011

The title says it all! This book is great. Personally, I have never been an overly avid reader, usually growing bored of reading books that I start, but this book for me was the kind of thing that you would want to stay up that extra 10 minutes just to get another chapter in. This is a very good mystery, not as predictable as a lot of mysteries have become these days. Just when you feel like you have everything figured out, new information comes into play that makes you second guess your previous thoughts. Other than the main aspect of this mystery, you can also enjoy reading about the main characters personal life with her friends, and her internal struggle to allow someone "special" into her life. For me, it is always good to be able to enjoy the side story of the book as well as the main plot, it leaves no "filler" content, and never brings you to a part in the book you'd rather not read because it is dry. Overall, this book kept me up a lot later than I would have liked to go to bed just because it was that interesting. You will not want to put it down! 5/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars not your typical mystery, June 22, 2011

I usually get bored very quickly with the standard "easily guess every step of the way" book, but this particular writing had me guessing through most of the content. I could not put it down until I found the answer to each question. I was born in the area where this takes place ans found it easy to place myself in the locales that are mentioned. I was very impressed with the depth of the storyline and the characters, along with the twists and turns at every page. It was well thought out and appeared to have hints at a possible sequel, which I will await. I heartily recommend this book, and look forward to anything more by the author.
