Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury, a gritty, military first-person shooter embodies the production values of a blockbuster Hollywood film with an ultra-realistic game world spanning Middle Eastern cities to secret military bases in the frozen backcountry of Russia to other global hotspots in the Philippines, Bosnia and Western Europe.

Set in the near future, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury thrusts players into the battle-scarred combat boots of an elite Delta Force operative. When a female Russian double-agent discovers information on Red Mercury -- a secret substance that can be used as a nuclear accelerant -- the player is hand-picked by the National Security Agency (NSA) to pursue the Red Mercury before it is used to build backpack nuclear devices and sold to terrorist organizations.

Players will face various single player gameplay challenges, such as hostage rescue, demolition and body guard as they fight alongside (and sometimes against) international special forces from the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and Germany. More than 20 authentic general military and special forces weapons will be available to choose from, each with a unique strategic strength against various targets of opportunity.

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury features complete multiplayer support. Several different game modes will be included at launch, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Plant the Bomb, Capture the Flag and Escort.

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury ups the ante on video game production values with photorealistic characters featuring facial animation and motion captured body animations performed by real members of elite special forces teams. Pounding battlefield sound effects transmit in immersive Dolby 5.1 surround sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun game...., October 8, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shadow Ops: Red Mercury (DVD Box) (CD-ROM)
I loved the graphics. I found the AI somewhat weak, but reasonable. I found the cut-scenes satisfying. The levels were creative and quite large. The plot-line lacking somewhat in substance. But, the game carries through that very well. This ran nice on a middle-of-the-road system. I ,personally, think that ATARI did more than just a fine job with this. It was very well executed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good game, but exceptionally poor use of checkpoints, December 1, 2009

When I first installed this game I wasn't expecting much. My initial take on the graphics was that they were below average for 2004, but I found myself more impressed as the game wore on. While not cutting edge, the game is a good traditional shooter with a variety of settings and situations to keep it interesting. It's old style in the sense that your ammo is picked up from dead enemies health is replenished with medkits found throughout the environment. Most of the game is spent chasing after some bad guys to prevent them from exploding some nasty super weapons.

The story line is a little lame, but is made up for by the busty babes on both sides. Weapons include sub machine guns, pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, grenades, and rocket launchers. One peculiarity is that the pistol is actually more effective than one of the belt fed light machine guns. This is one game where it pays to conserve ammo and health. Enemies often surprise you and can come at you in waves.

The game played fine on Vista x64, but it didn't have my exact 16x10 screen resolution. I believe there is one patch available which I loaded. By modern standards, this is a fairly long game, but I was still disappointed to reach the end.

The only part of this game that really sucks in that there is no way for the player to manually save games. Instead this game has a very frustrating checkpoint save system. The distance between checkpoints ranges from very easy to agonizingly long. Sometimes you can easily get to the next checkpoint without getting killed, but sometimes you play for a half hour before you're repeatedly killed just before getting to the next checkpoint. I played one segment at least 20 times. I would have easily given the game four stars if it weren't for that.

Overall, I give the game a thumbs up, especially if you get it for a bargain price (I paid $3.99). While not groundbreaking, the game is competent, fun, and the good easily outweighs the bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars 64 bit play is pretty good, August 4, 2005
By
FPS Fan (Henderson, Nv USA) - See all my reviews
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shadow Ops: Red Mercury (DVD Box) (CD-ROM)
This game is not bad when played in it's 64 bit mode. The 64 bit mode loads automatically when you're using a 64-bit operating system.

The AI is very weak and certain graphics features are less than impressive, but there are things that compensate for these shortcomings. First, the 64-bit graphic enhancements more than make up for the weak graphics structure that carries over from the 32-bit mode. Second, the "lean and peak" aspect of this game makes it quite enjoyable (I wish other FPS games employed this feature). Also, the story line is adequate.
I only reccomend playing this game in the 64-bit mode (the 64-bit version of far cry blows shadow ops away, but the 64-bit shadow ops is still enjoyable). I played the first three levels in 32-bit before I started over in 64-bit; I think the bad reviews, which are based on the 32 bit version, are warranted. This game, however, is meant to be played under the 64 bit archetecture.
The system I played this on is as follows: AMD Athlon 64 3000 processor, 1536 MB DDR RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT graphics card, and I used the Windows XP x64 operating system. I played the game at a resolution of 1920 x 1440 with no problems (all detail settings were also maxed out).
