Casting a New Shadow on Redwork,
By Patty - USA Scots Lass "Patty - USA Scots Lass" (Carlsbad, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shadow Redwork with Alex Anderson: 24 Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
What could be more American than Redwork? How about Redwork with inspiration? Alex Anderson has spun a new twist to an all-time favorite needle art, by producing a clever and creative book on this uniquely American craft entitled, "Shadow Redwork". By including a subtle message of inspiration or love in the background using ecru embroidery, Alex has devised an interesting look, which causes the viewer to ponder more deeply our handiwork. For those of us who labor to produce personalized heirlooms for special folks, a few extra oohs and ahs goes a long way! Ms. Anderson's directions are simple to follow, with some handy tips interspersed along the way. Most appreciated are her Stitch Directions including diagrams for both right and left-handed needle crafters. She includes some simple enough designs for those new to Redwork, including her "Nasturtiums Pillow" as well as the "Seasons Banner", along with some more challenging projects for the seasoned Redwork enthusiast. A tip from one of those seasoned Redwork enthusiasts - when tracing the Redwork part of the pattern, try using a red, .05 Micron permanent pen. If your stitches are slightly off the tracing line, you will never notice! Keep up the great work, Alex; we look forward to your next imaginative quilting venture!

Shadow Redwork,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadow Redwork with Alex Anderson: 24 Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
Instructions are clear and well written. Some of the patterns are difficult to read the shadow words because of the letters being hidden behind the flowers.I disagree with Alex's instructions to embroider the flowers first then trace the letters and embroider them. This requires going over the design twice. Projects are great and general instructions very good for completing them. The patterns may be adapted to any of the projects in the book. A basic knowledge of embroidery is helpful.

Alex has done it again. The designs in this book are beautiful and can be adapted to many different projects. Instructions are clear and well written, and include left and right handed instruction. Good for beginners and more experienced redworkers as well. I highly recommend this book.

Easy Shadow embroidery,
This review is from: Shadow Redwork with Alex Anderson: 24 Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
Shadow Redwork by Alex Anderson shows a really fun and easy method for doing shadow embroidery. Redwork is very popular now, and if you can do hand embroidery or want to learn how, this technique offers suggestions on adding a new dimension to your embroidery or quilting projects. I've been thinking about reading this book for a long time, but kept putting it off because I thought I would be learning how to do traditional shadow embroidery, with the added sheer layer over embroidery and stitching over this and I did not want the extra time involvement for a simple embroidered block.
Now, I can't believe how easy it really is. Anderson offers several patterns and projects for the redwork, but this technique is very versatile and adaptable to other projects. Included in the book is the alphabet in nice lettering, so I am planning on adding this to my next embroidered quilt block. If you enjoy hand embroidery, this book will offer suggestions to increase your creativity!

I bought this beautiful book a few years ago. I either barrowed it out or misplaced it. I loved it so much, I needed to purchase it again. Anyone that loves to stitch or wants to add redwork to their collection I highly recommend Shadow Redwork. ;-)

I love doing redwork and I like the way Alex Anderson has put this book together.
I had misplaced my original book, sooo I knew I could not find another one in my area. My husband suggested Amazon.com. It was delivered quickly so I can now finish my project. We mistakenly ordered two and when I got the first one I kept it. Then I got the second one I returned it and within two or three weeks I got my refund. That, I want to thank you for being honest. |
