Book Description

Marion and James Fraser are a young couple who appear to have it all. Their luck changes, however, when they move into a lovely, old mansion with a rose garden. Marion falls ill and begins to have strange dreams, in which she seems to be leading the life of a young Victorian woman, Mariana Wilkinson.

Mariana Wilkinson used to visit the house as the guest of a friend, whose mother is thought to have drowned in a boating accident. During her stays with the family, Mariana comes to suspect that foul play was involved. After investigating, she accuses someone of murder. Then a chance remark raises a terrifying doubt: has she persecuted an innocent person? Despite her best efforts, she never knows for sure.

Marion Fraser, in the twentieth century, is determined to find answers and drive away the guilt that has been hovering about the house like a ghost. Again and again, she travels back in time, gathering clues, but also falling in love. Obsessed with the past, she neglects her relationship with James, who threatens to leave her. Can she solve the mystery without losing him?

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat romance/whodunit December 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this story. It is a two-generation historical romance/whodunit. I recommend it to any reader who likes historical romances and/or whodunits. It kept my attention so that I would read a chapter any time I could grab a couple of minutes. Even got up earlier in the morning to have time to read before I had to start my day. I will look for more novels of this genre.

I found the plot line of this novel interesting altho the timeline jumps were a bit confusing at times. I'm glad it had a solid happy ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ghosts or past life? February 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After buying an old Victorian home, the wife beings to see ghosts, and have very vivid dreams, or recollections of a past life in the house. A murder, a poisoning, a suicide and all the expected cover-up go into the mix.

Enjoyed the story. It's also a chance to read books by authors not on the best selling list. This author got you into the characters of the story right from the beginning. Recommend highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars good March 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Laura Jane Leigh is a good writer. She had me interested the entire way through the book until the end. It's the plot that left something to be desired. I would recommend that she go on an Alfred Hitchcock watching marathon before she writes her next book so that she can see what I mean, without me giving away the end of the novel.

The plot of the book goes like this; wife falls in love with classic centuries-old mansion and she and her lawyer husband buy it. Wife succumbs to strange illness and has dream-like visions of a crime that happened in the house nearly a hundred years ago. Husband fears for wife's mental health, but wife doesn't want the visions to stop until she knows what happened in the house.

Other than the ending, I was hooked from the first page of Shadow of the Rose. Her writing flowed as naturally as any suspense novel, and I loved her female characters. The male characters were a little flat and uninteresting, and never picked up steam. I just couldn't get a handle of Marion's husband James.

The way the author wove two stories together kept my interest. It was easy to keep the two times separate so that the two threads of the story circled around each other without becoming tangled. The author never really told us whether it was reincarnation, or ghosts that caused Marion to have her 'visions' of the past, and in the end, it still wasn't clear.

I was reminded of a movie starring Emma Thompson, which I can't remember the name of, that had two people playing out a second set of lives with each other. The ending was totally surprising, something this story was not.

If this is a first novel, then Leigh has a great start in her writing career. Her writing was intriguing, and professional, and can stand up to any bestseller. This book almost had it all, and it's still a good 'beach read'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice period piece October 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love the Canadian authors. I get to learn so much about this country and its history.

This particular book has some elements of time travel, but it is mostly a period piece. Nice middle class Marion moves into a new house in Montreal and immediately begins to pick up vibes of long past (read dead ) residents. The story is very interesting and well written.

Interesting read. The historic throwbacks were well used. The writer's style was juvenile. I did enjoy the mix of the past and present.
