Book Description

Gentile Hills August 1999
Big-City Dreams, Small-Town Romance, Deep Dark Secrets

Gifted storyteller Lance Wubbels again returns to small-town Minnesota for a new tale of romance, forgiveness, and trust. One of the most respected writers today, Wubbels spins gentle tales filled with history, memorable characters, and engaging plots that have been a favorite of readers everywhere. Now with In the Shadow of a Secret, Wubbels continues to write slice-of -American-history novels that will fill your heart and find a prominent place on your bookshelf.

In the Shadow of a Secret introduces Andrew Regan and Christina Ellington, strangers who meet in a small southern Minnesota town in 1937. A recent seminary graduate, Regan arrives to take over a village church despite having been offered several larger pastorates in the cities. He feels the church is where God is leading him to be until a passel of troubles early on make him question his decision.

Christina left Minnesota to pursue art lessons in Chicago with a famous artist. In paying for her instruction she is commissioned by the city's wealthiest families to paint portraits, opening the door to a future she never thought possible. Secrets she left at home, however, resurface and her mother's sudden illness forces her to return despite her desire to escape forever.

At home once more, Christina realizes that in caring for her mother, she and her family must finally reconcile and confront the years of separation and pain that have divided them for so long. When Andrew steps in as an ally and source of comfort, the two are soon faced with the question of whether their new friendship can be anything more.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Christina Ellington thrives as a portrait artist in 1937 Chicago. When Andrew Regan answers a call to the ministry in tiny Liberty Center, MN, Christina and Andrew are drawn together by concern for his new friend, Rebecca EllingtonAChristina's mother. When Christina discovers why her grandparents disowned Rebecca so long ago, she finds it difficult to reconcile those reasons with her belief in a loving God. Although Andrew's ministry is off to a rocky start because of his friendship with a "loose" woman and her child, he feels a kinship with the Lord that challenges him to break the mold of the past. Well worth your time to read this one. Any teen or adult would benefit from the messsage of this book. The characters are beleivable, as is the story. There is much to learn and enjoy in this book. I'll read it more than once. The title above says it is part of the Gentle Hills series, but I think is comes before that series.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book by an Excellent Writer, October 6, 1999

This is a beautiful, moving story by a writer who doesn't get much attention, but is better at what he does than many of the "bestselling" Christian writers in the marketplace.

A Lance Wubbels story always gives me the feeling I've learned something important, but haven't been hit over the head learning it. Most of all, I just enjoy his characters and his stories.

If you like a good, wholesome story, this man delivers.
