Book Description

2008
Krista Marlow has traveled to a cozy cabin in the snow-shrouded woods of Huron Station, Michigan for a winter vacation. But a turn down a desolate road through the woods brings her to a horrible site. The body of a man hung from a tree, the arrow that pierced his heart like a push-pin in a streaming map of blood. The victim, a hunter, may have been killed by a radical anti-hunting group. A blood-soaked sign with the words "Stop the Kill" scrawled on it was positioned under his body. Krista finds herself in the center of the investigation into the man's murder. She saw a car speeding by her as she drove down the road, and may be able to identify the killer-she caught a glimpse of the driver's face as the car sped past her. Mark Dalby, the Sheriff investigating the crime, is determined to protect his chief witness as Krista becomes the prey for a clever killer as he hunts his next victim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, November 16, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Shadow On The Snow (Paperback)
Krista Marlow is trying to make some changes in her life and travels to a family cabin in Huron Station, Michigan, to relax and work through her problems.

Huron Station's Sheriff, Mark Dalby, welcomes her to town with a ticket after she rear ends his police car.

After dealing with the appealing but gruff police officer, she loses her way to the cabin in the snowy woods and finds a dead body hanging from a tree with an arrow through his heart. And worse, the killer may think she saw him speeding away from the scene.

Not an auspicious start to what should have been a quiet and relaxing trip.

Krista, a strong young woman, is threatened and attacked which spurs her into action. She needs to find the killer before the killer takes her life. And there's an old radio that keeps turning itself on to 1960's music and news, an odd and disquieting situation.

While Krista searches for information and asks too many questions for someone's comfort, the Sheriff and a neighbor compete for Krista's love. Or could one of the two men be the killer?

Dorothy Bodoin weaves suspects and suspense throughout her story with ease. This reader couldn't put it down. I felt like I was right there in the cabin and the snow with Ms. Bodoin's protagonist. The conclusion was exciting and satisfying and left no questions unanswered.

I've read most of Ms. Bodoin's books and highly recommend her work. Her stories are a modern day gothic style and most enjoyable--very entertaining and sometimes thought provoking. I'm looking forward to her next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Tale of Suspense, June 21, 2006
By
Cindy Chow (Kaneohe, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Shadow on the Snow (Hardcover)
Krista Marlow's return to her Aunt's cabin in Michigan wasn't starting off well. First she gets a ticket for hitting the sheriff's car. Then she discovers the body of a wealthy hunter hanging from a tree, his body pierced by an arrow.

While suspicion falls on a hunting protestor, Krista begins to feel threatened by trespassers and is eventually attacked, possibly by someone she may have seen near the murder site. While the sheriff provides aid in the gift of a guard dog, Krista's attraction to the lawman both intrigues and irritates her. As the small town atmosphere, where everyone knows everyone else's business, begins to weigh on her, Krista finds herself drawn into an investigation where her closest neighbors may be her greatest threats.

Bodin excels at writing a mystery that beautifully conveys the sense of isolation the harsh winter enforces, as well creating a novel that has a locked-room mystery feel to it. Krista is an engaging lead character, and her wit and self-deprecation has the reader falling under her spell. This is a fun mystery to read while curled up in a warm bed and will delight fans of regional and gothic mysteries with its touch of romance accompanying loads of suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful whodunit!, May 13, 2006
This review is from: A Shadow On The Snow (Paperback)
Her life is riddled with problems, so Krista Marlow decides to get away from it all and retreat to a family cabin in remote upstate Michigan, hoping to find the solitude to work through her troubles. Only, the bad luck cloud seems to have followed her, for no sooner than she hits the small burg, she also hits the sheriff. Sheriff Mark Dably welcomes Krista to town - along with handing her a ticket for rear-ending him.

Things don't take a turn for the better either, as Krista loses her direction in the snowy wood and then stumbles upon a dead body. Not just someone dead from natural causes, mind you, this one is hanging from a tree and has an arrow piercing his heart. With this string of misfortune, you just KNOW the killer spies her spying him. So much for the quietude of the snow-covered cabin.

Not prepared to just sit and wait for the killer to come after her, she knows she has to discover the killer before he tracks her down. Krista keeps poking around, asking questions, that paint a target on her back, if there wasn't already one there. Also her neighbor and the sheriff are paying court, but Krista is getting the feeling one of them might be the killer.

Bodoin gives you a tense tale of suspense, with a natural flair. She evokes the sense of isolation in the snowy tale and builds to a satisfying climax that deftly ties up all the lose ends to the readers satisfaction. Bodoin's writing is a delightful mix of whodunit and gothic romance.

This is my first Bodoin's tale, but won't be my last. Highly recommended. Would make a wonderful movie.
