Book Description

For over ten years, there has been peace in Britain after Arthur and his warriors soundly defeated the Saxons at the battle of Caer Baddon. But sometimes peace is deceptive ...

After a series of hard winters and famine, an alliance of dissatisfied northern kings attack the rich cities of Southern Britain. But in the years of peace, Arthur's army has grown soft; jealousies and trivialities rip once strong alliances apart. Cador, who is mockingly referred to as "farmer king," must go to war again. The threat to their way of life throws him together with Yseult, the woman he has secretly loved since he was a youth.

But can their politically expedient marriage help bring peace to Britain again? Or will it only lead to further conflict? As betrayals both real and imagined shake the foundations of former British unity, Cador and Yseult must try to negotiate their own personal peace. Who will survive the upheavals to come? Will Britain rally once more behind a common leader to fight off the common threat?

Shadow of Stone:
There was once a woman, fair as the moon, who lived most of her life beyond the realm of legend. As she stood beside the grave of her lover, the legend that ended with his death was far from her mind. Her soul felt as dark as the shadow cast by Drystan's standing stone, dark and barren. Love was over, but life was not; she would have to find a way to go on, for the sake of their son.

This is the story of how Yseult outlived the legend that had been her life.

Praise for Ruth Nestvold:
"... an excellent up-and-comer."
- Cory Doctorow at Boing Boing

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Shadow of Stone is Book Two of the Pendragon Chronicles. Yseult, A Tale of Love in the Age of King Arthur, Book One of the Pendragon Chronicles, tells the tragic love story of Yseult and Drystan, based on the ancient legend of Tristan and Isolde.

I like to imagine that if there ever was a Britain in which a Dux Bellorum by the name of Arthur led men named Cador and Bedwyr and Cai to battle, it might even have been a little like the world I have created in Yseult and Shadow of Stone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done -- June 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Yseult" caught my eye as one of the "free" Kindle books. Read it from cover to cover in just a few days. I've always enjoyed historical romances from this period of time, and was captivated by Ms. Nestvold's writing. It reminded me of Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Avalon" series. Was honored and thrilled to receive "Shadow of Stone". Her research of the period seems right on in both "Yseult" and in "Shadow of Stone", as both stories show the lifestyle of the times and the day-to-day living during periods of war and peace. In addition, the twists and turns of the plot kept me wanting more. I was truly captivated with these stories, and am hoping she'll continue the series following the lives of not only Yseult, Cador and their companions, but that of Kustennin and Riona as well.

Shadow of Stone takes up 10 years after the author's book, Yseult, leaves off. Drystan is dead. Cador now rules over his own lands and estates in a time of peace.

The Dux Bellorum, Arthur, presides over an uneasy collection of alliances and kings.

But the peace is about to be broken. There will be betrayals, and the warriors of Arthur's band, as well as the now-grown children will be put to the test.

In the end, will Britain survive as a united country?

If you liked the thoroughly researched battles and journeys of the characters in Yseult, the fun continues here in Shadow of Stone. Cador still longs for Yseult, Yseult still has a heart full of love despite Drystan's passing; they are full of passion, but it is tempered with a melancholy or sad wisdom. Their children and nieces and nephews all have their own parts to play in this tale. Instead of St. Patrick, we get the welsh St. Illtud as foil/helper for Yseult.

This is the end of Arthur's story, with appearances by Nimue, Myrrdin, and Medraut (Mordred) to seal his fate.

Anyone interested in Celtic history, Arthur legends, or historical fantasy based on solidly researched places, locations, and people will enjoy how the author breathes life into people from this time.

This Book's Snack Rating: Like the first novel in the series, reading Shadow of Stone is like eating a giant bag of kettle chips for the solid historical crunch and sturdy flavor of ancient Britain

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to Yseult. June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Shadow of Stone by Ruth Nestvold is the follow up to Yseult: A Tale of Love in the Age of King Arthur (The Pendragon Chronicles), which was one of my favourite books this year. Yseult was the story of Drystan and Yseult, but in this book, it's been ten years since Drystan has died, and Yseult has had to make a life for herself. Like the previous book, this is also not just a romance - it has politics, battles, the struggle between the old ways and the new and more!

I can't really review this book very well as a stand alone, so please forgive the constant comparisons with Yseult. Yseult is truly epic, spanning the cultures of Eriu and Brittania, the passionate love of Drystan and Yseult and the impossible dream of unifying Britain. Shadow of Stone is a much less idealistic book. All the familiar characters from Yseult are older and no longer look at the world through the rosy lenses of youth. They are more pragmatic, more cynical - simply older.

That doesn't mean that the book is any less interesting. Nestvold's characters are still compelling, and still growing and learning. Yseult can never love like she loved Drystan, but discovers that that may not be such a bad thing. The conflict between the pagans and the Christians has settled into a compromise, but there is still the occasional disagreement. It's exciting to see the impassioned young men and women we met in Yseult grow into the (mostly) levelheaded adults in Shadow in Stone. I really enjoyed the book's focus on Cador; he was a great character in the previous book and he's grown into a great man and king.

So what actually happens?

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow of Stone March 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I picked this marvelous book up in a newsletter I get for freebie Kindle books. Imagine my delight and surprise when I discovered that this book was excellently researched and written. Ms. Nestvold immediately draws you into her finely crafted tale of Arthurian times. It was very interesting to read how the women of that era "helped" to shape the fate of Britain. Most of the stories written of this time period only give you the male perspective of events. Shadow of Stone gives you both equally. I started reading this book on a Friday afternoon and rarely put it down the whole weekend. Matter of fact, I fell asleep with my Kindle in my hand. This book has earned its place in my favorites of Arthurian legends. It is right up there with my beloved Mists of Avalon. Ms. Nestvold you write excellently and I'm getting Yseult today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Yseult March 6, 2013
By Cary
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
More Arthurian tales told as plausible history. Using Yseult (Ysolde) after the death of Drystan/Tristan as a central character to tie the tales together, the story continues through Arthur's death.
Well written, fascinating, and dense with historical detail that feels exactly right for people trying to uphold the Roman lifestyle after the Romans left.

More About the Author

Since about the age six, Ruth Nestvold wanted to be a writer (besides wanting to be a singer and an actress and President of the United States), but for too many years she put practical pursuits first and writing fiction second. After completing a Ph.D. in literature and working as lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Freiburg, she took time off from academic pursuits to attend the Clarion West Writers Workshop, a six week "boot camp" for writers of science fiction and fantasy. She learned more there than she could have dreamed possible, changed her priorities, and gave up theory for imagination. Two years later, she sold her first short story to the acclaimed science fiction magazine, Asimov's. Since then, she has sold over forty pieces of short fiction to a variety of markets, including Baen's Universe, Strange Horizons, Scifiction, F&SF, Realms of Fantasy, and several year's best anthologies. She has been nominated for the Nebula, the Sturgeon, and the Tiptree awards. In 2007, the Italian translation of her novella "Looking Through Lace" won the "Premio Italia" for best international work. Her novel Yseult appeared in German translation as Flamme und Harfe with Random House Germany and has since been translated into Dutch and Italian. It is now available as an ebook in the original English. It was followed in June 2012 by the second book in the Pendragon Chronicles, "Shadow of Stone" (http://pendragonchronicles.wordpress.com). She taught creative writing for a semester at the University of Stuttgart, participates regularly in online writing workshops, and founded the Villa Diodati workshop for English-speaking writers of speculative fiction in Europe. She maintains a web site at www.ruthnestvold.com.
