4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, tugs at your heartstrings. Kinda intense
I got the hardcover. Nice book. Well, actually it's sad, but nicely written.
I have dealt with some cancer patients but I had never heard of the Shadows. That's wild to think that the flash was so bright that people turned to shadows on stone.
I liked the way you couldn't tell if the man was halluinating or not. That gave it so much suspense.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish self-published protest novel
An earnest but amateurish and incoherent self-published protest novel featuring a reluctant Nazi who experiences the Hiroshima bombing and later goes on a crusade to prevent nuclear war by intervening at crucial points in the Cold War, using Nazi loot to finance his efforts. The back cover bears enthusiastic blurbs attributed to nonexistent publications.

I'm giving it 4 stars because parents should use some discretion before letting kids read Hiroshima Stones - it's a shocker!

Have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real winner - tight, fast, well-researched and, romantic, October 5, 2002
By
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
I found Hiroshima Stones to offer profound insight into the history of peace and war from around 1940 to 1960. I think this quick-reading book will be of extreme interest both to people looking for interesting, dramatic storytelling as well as those looking for accurate historical information. it packs the punch of a Tom Clancy techno-thriller into a very tight little package, with plenty of action and romance. Obviously a lot of research has been done by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely has my Most High Recommendation, September 19, 2002
By
Sher (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
I received an advance review copy of Hiroshima Stones and was utterly blown away (no pun intended) by the combination of the depth of research and the depth of the human emotion. Very tastefuly done, not gory or profane, yet powerful and honest, not sidestepping issues of violence, sex, and drug use. The Author has a brisk, vibrant writing style that sweeps you along like you're watching a movie. I felt that my time was respected; I was able to read the book quickly without being bogged down in needless details.
I have a much greater appreciation for the sufferings of all people who want peace in this warlike world. I suggest you read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hiroshima Stones is breathtaking! Truly amazing., November 11, 2002

I was very moved and interested in the effects of war on the people who experienced it. ... the nuclear bombs and the results of our using them.... the human cost of war and nuclear development. ... the loss of life and the lifelong horrific trauma ... the idea that this could have been me or my loved ones and friends. I wanted to go to Hiroshima and see the memorials for myself. The shadow pictures moved me deeply. The images of the people after the bomb are engraved in my mind - I can still see them. - I think a movie of Hiroshima Stones would be EXCELLENT!
I am grateful to the author for putting in word what I have felt for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brisk exciting reading and educational as well, April 25, 2003
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
What could be more timely?
A love story with historical context that deals with the basic issues of weapons of mass destruction.
For the first time in a long time I didn't feel guilty spending time on a fiction book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something very special and genuine you should appreciate, February 22, 2003
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
...What kept me interested, being a history buff, was seeing how the author had worked so many bang-on historical details into the plot. I like a marvelously paced plot and as well as depth, but seldom find both in one short novel.

The romance appealed to my wife more than me, but it was handled with inventiveness, particularly in the Red and Gold edition.

Painful at times, but I felt strangely uplifted, I think because the author shared my vision of life after death which tempers the horror of man's inhumanity to man.
THe more I think about it I must say this is an unique novel, profoundly thought-provoking, and smart beneath it's shiny surface.

I understand that some people who are swept up in the country's mad rush to war might pan any book which proposes that there is a better way. IN fact, it seems to me that you can't understand the current military dominance in our fine land without understanding HIroshima and the fear-frenzy of the nuclear arms race. Substitute "Terrorist" for "Communist" and the words of this book sound like they came out of today's headlines.
Of course many books point out the issues of the Arms Race. What's different about this novel, and needed, is the emotional connection that makes the facts come to life.

Long after you put this book down it will linger in your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a page- turner!, October 31, 2002
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
I read this book last night and couldn't put it down! My wife had to hit me on the head to make me go to sleep!
I love the way Troy writes- fast paced sentences, sometimes fragmented, pushing images into your brain like vivid memories.
Wow! Check it out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!, October 23, 2002
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
This is one of those classic love stories, set inside an important and true historical setting, like BraveHeart, or Dr. Zhivago. Kind of like Schindler's List, but with a love story at the center.
I couldn't stop turning the pages. The beautiful images at the start of each chapter were really enlightening too, like sweet little rewards for finishing the chapter before.
This book really made me think about the complexities of any war, especially modern war with its massive killing power and the difficulty of keeping civilians out of danger.
But the most important and unique thing is the LOVE STORY! The lead character, Klaus, is so memorable as he struggles to do the right thing in a complex world.
Read and enjoy! It won't take you very long.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the kind of book I love!, February 5, 2003
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
I like books that move fast, that make time go away as if you were watching a great movie. The Hiroshima Stones definitely did that for me.
The characters were totally vivid, I could see them in my mind. That's when you know you've got a winner.
The plot of this book is out of this world. I mean it really takes some twists and turns right out of the blue that you'd never expect.
I read it twice in two days.
Hiroshima Stones is going to make a killer movie.
I also liked the style of the book's design. I didn't expect the cover to be so nice and the size to be as big.
I think you're really going to like the book.
By the way, it's really like two books in one.
There's the first half, that reads with the plot of the love story, then the 2nd half that totally takes you by surprise cause it's set on a different continent.
Then the 3rd part at the end of the book is cool because there's so much research and documentationfor the stuff in the book you thought couldn't have possibly been true, but was.
I know I'm being a little vague cause I don't want to give away any secrets or spoil the ending for you.
Read on!

5.0 out of 5 stars I was quite taken, though this reads faster than my usual, August 8, 2003
This review is from: The Shadow Stones of Hiroshima (Paperback)
Mr. Nilsson has created a brisk, compelling tale, apparently designed to rip the sleepy eyelids off of the MTV Generation so that they may see history for perhaps the first time.
An excellent purchase.

The buyer may note that the copy I received had a striking gold cover, with a shadow on the back.
