Product Description

Credenza R, a shockingly beautiful and well-read young woman, has lived inside the New York City subway system all her life; she has never been aboveground. Ruby Cooper, a filthy rich misanthrope, lives in an abandoned building adorned with hundreds of hummingbirds she has sculpted out of colored wire. Their lives collide, enabling them to find magic in the underground. When they discover a series of government-constructed tunnels connecting all the major cities on the Eastern seaboard, Credenza and Ruby embark upon the greatest, and most dangerous, adventure of their lives.

About the Author

Laura Thomas lives in Mammoth Lakes, California, where she’s currently working on her fifth album of original music (www.laurathomasband.com). This is her first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lisbeth's American Twin Sister?, June 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Shadow Swans (Kindle Edition)
I adored this surprising story for the beauty it reveals in toughness and grit, in pure distaste for the norm, and in the unpredictable paths carved out by love. Shimmering with tactile pleasure in a paradoxically repulsive underground world, the writing produces the visceral pleasure of travel with the bonus-thrill of a Goonies adventure. Dripping caves, disgusting hallucinogens, secret government plots, it's Alice in Wonderland does New York! Outrageous but so real it makes you wonder what the author made up about the tunnel system. If you liked Lisbeth (tough, smart, and a lot different) in Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, Ruby could be her twin American sister, adopted at birth by a too-perfect American family. Now in her young twenties, she's lured into a world of real trouble, compelled to find her true self. Thrilling, with a great ending.

I absolutely could not put this book down. Loved it! The authors attention to detail is amazing and at times made me think that this had to be a true story. I had this book finished within days. I literally couldn't wait for my son to go to bed so that I could climb under the covers and read. I hope this author has more coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unique. Epic. Un-put-downable, September 30, 2011

I had heard of Laura Thomas as a singer-songwriter, so I was intrigued as much as anything to read this book. I absolutely loved it! She really writes well -- which is perhaps not surprising given that she is a musician. But the story was fantastic too. Kind of quirky and alternative. Blade Runner meets Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, only not science fiction and not "coming of age". Her description of this other world was brilliant and absolutely convincing. I live in New York and it was a little weird to read it on my iphone while traveling in the subways. I almost felt like a character in the book. But the literal "underworld" was totally plausible and fascinating -- as were all the characters. A few weeks later, I still have this book strongly in my head. Especially on the subway when I see graffiti between stations. And it would make a great movie, with Dakota Fanning as Credenza and Christina Ricci as Ruby. Someone needs to send it to one of them. I highly recommend.
