Book Description

All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.

But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the history of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?

Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.

'Shadow of Time' blends the best of the paranormal romance, YA and NA genre to give readers a unique story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Native American Theme! February 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book when I found out Native Americans were a part of the story. I enjoyed how the author used real Navajo words and customs. Frankly, I thought the author must have lived in the location of this book and personally knew about this culture, so I was floored when I found out she had never been in the United States. That was awesome research! And she also converted the book from Dutch into English (and American English at that!). Very admirable.
I loved the storyline that included Hannah, Josh (the hot Native American), and Hannah's brother Ben. There were aspects of reincarnation, animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skinwalkers (think of evil ghosts that can change into people or animals) that drew me in and had me hooked. There was romance, humor, horror, and history all wrapped in this book that made it a joy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book that Makes You a Better Person January 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ever since the very first pages, I felt incredibly hooked by the story. I usually know right from the beggining if I like a book or not, and it seems that I was right this time too.

Hannah is a lovable character right from the start, with her shyness, sense of humour and insecureness. She is very dedicated in everything she does, and will not back out when it comes to the people she loves, even if she is in mortal danger. Throughout the book, I could relate to most of what she was experiencing, but I felt a little bit annoyed when she was crying like a baby because of Josh. However, I also think that this would have been the case for any of us women if we had had to go through a situation like hers. I could tell from very early on that there was something more to Josh than met the eye. And it's such a pity I can't tell you how amazing it was when I discovered exactly what. I would spoil the book for you if I did. His connection to Hannah is very clear, not only to them, but also to the people around them. It literally made me mumble "you idiot!" anytime Josh was afraid of getting involved into a serious relationship with her. I loved him at the beggining, hated him and ended up loving him a lot more when I found out about his motives.

My favourite parts were definitely the ones where the Dinè's way of life was detailed. From the way they think and eat, to the way they act and talk. Jen documented herself very well and it is amazing to what extent she managed to describe everything, especially when you find out that she has never been to America, let alone Navajo Nation!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read!! March 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
First let me say, I loved the title, Shadow of Time. There is something just elegant about the name of this book and I was intrigued to read it from the get-go! Oh and I am so glad I got in on the reading and reviewing of Ms Minkman's book. It was awesome.

Her characters are quite believable and quite likable as well. Hannah is brave and strong when faced with the things she does not understand. She is faithful and loyal to her friends and her younger brother and finds herself falling in love with Josh, who she had watched grow up throughout the years. Now that he is almost an adult and built very sensually, she just can't help but fall for him.

The storyline centers around a curse....a very old and dangerous curse. It started with Josh and now it includes Hannah too. There is a lot of Indian lore, spiritualism, and ritual as well as past life experience in this read.

I loved how Ms. Minkman told her story......smooth and fluent. I loved the bond between Hannah, Josh and Ben. I loved watching Hannah and Josh's romance bloom and grow. It certainly was a read about sustaining friendships, and love throughout the ages.

As a reader, I felt like the author did a lot of wonderful research and I felt like I came away knowing more about Navajo Nation than I ever dreamed possible. Thank you Ms. Minkman for having the passion and commitment to write such a beautiful book.

I didn't know what to expect when I started Shadow of Time. Fantasy, perhaps, because of the cover and the labels found on Goodreads. But I was pleasantly surprised that it's actually a mix genres and elements: Chick-lit Romance, Historical Mystery, and Paranormal Romance that leans more toward Supernatural because of the Navajo and spiritual lore, with tendrils reminiscent of time-travel and reincarnation. All was weaved to make a lovely and wonderful spectrum of a story. Jen

While the first half of the book focused more on the romance between Hannah and Josh, and I could've done without some of her fretting over his feelings, her own feelings, and their slight age difference, I really liked the friends-to-lovers aspect and how it, as well as all the other relationships, played an unexpected, atypical role in the plot. Hannah and Josh were not just kindred spirits and romantically drawn to each other as adults; they unknowingly found one another when they were children and were bound before even then. It was incredibly romantic (and heart-breaking) as the rest of the story develops and unfolds.

And I love how the story does. The second half of this book was amazing. I adored all the characters and their interaction. With how the relationships developed, there was a very strong sense of family and it expanding. The supernatural elements were believable and so well described that I got the chills.

But what really captivated me was the Navajo history and beliefs. Jen Minkman, the author, transported me to a different time and culture with historical and primitive details.
