Review

Achieve old-world style with this innovative technique, which combines the expertise of trapunto with shadow quilting, giving you two for the price of one. For those not familiar with trapunto, it is a very old technique whereby you 'stuff' areas of your work to give it greater loft or relief. There are 5 layers to the projects in this book as opposed to the normal three in standard quilting. The layers from top to bottom are organza, trapunto motifs made from batting, background fabric, batting and backing and the white design of the quilt top is made from the organza and trapunto motifs placed on the familiar quilt sandwich. This is a fascinating read and the starter projects are small enough for anyone to give the technique a try. Try something new today as Jamie Oliver would say!
--Jennifer Trollope, Fabrications Quilting for You; 06/26/12

Once you learn a relatively simple technique, explained clearly by the Romanian engineer-turned-quilter author, you'll have a hard time deciding which of the 30 elegant projects to start first. Includes a CD with full-size patterns.
--American Quilter, September 2012

Geta’s amazing quilts have been creating quite a sensation in the quilting world. Her techniques are revealed here with simple step-by-step instructions that can be easily followed to create your own shadow trapunto masterpieces. Try your new skills out on one of the 30 patterns for various projects and quilts included. Photos of Geta’s beautiful work provide plentiful inspiration.

About the Author

Geta Grama discovered quilting purely by chance while she was surfing the web in 2000. She now devotes herself entirely to her passion.

More About the Author

I discovered quilting on Internet, absolutely by chance. I live in Romania, a country where the word "quilt" is unknown to most people. I instantly fell in love with quilting; I adore playing with colors.
All I know about quilting I have learned on my own from books, from the Internet and from my mistakes.

I am a lonely quilter...I have just a few quilting friends here. If we are lucky, we are able to meet once every few years.
Class, lecture, retreat, guild, quilt shop, quilt show- for me these are just words I read about on Internet. But this doesn't stop me to enjoy every minute of my quilting life.

Quilting is the passion of my life but I also enjoy making bags and a few other crafts that involve playing with colors.

You can see my recent or old work on my blog:

This is a beautiful book! I initially bought it thinking I would just enjoy looking at all of Geta's beautiful quilts. But I have to say now that I have read it I could do this no problem. Everything is explained very well and it really is a simple but effective technique. I can't wait to get started.

Just received this book ... WOW!
The detail in these designs is absolutely amazing ... even though I read through the technique, I am still super impressed and wondering, how did she cut all those tiny openings and how did she do all that tiny detailed quilting?
So many fabulous designs to choose from! The book also includes the full-size patterns on CD in pdf format.
Absolutely worth the price!
Thank-you so much!

"Shadow Trapunto Quilts" by Geta Grama shows a new process of an old technique. When I was younger, I was taught to do shadow quilting, and I tried it-not too exciting or something that I'd want to base a career on. I remember making a white quilt with pastel colors under a piece of sheer fabric.
Grama's technique of Shadow Trapunto Quilts is almost a complete opposite. To make this quilt, you need a light colored piece of tulle, thick polyester batting, a dark background and the regular batting you normally use, and a quilt backing.
To review this book, I actually made a sample of a small quilt for my blog. I followed the instructions in Shadow Trapunto Quilts, and the technique that is used in all of smaller quilts in the book. The most time-consuming and stressful for me is cutting the batting away from the tulle. I did manage to accidentally cut the tulle. Grama allows for mistakes, and the tears are able to be mended in the quilting phase.
Shadow Trapunto Quilts has designs for several small quilts and they are all beautiful and intricate. Grama's technique is one worth trying and the trapunto (making a design puffy and raised) is amazing. Certainly, give it a try!

The book is well written , and I have gotten the basics. I found the CD did not work so that is a bummer because I learn much better with visual. I don't know if there is a way to replace it , if anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I will not start my project just yet , hope to hear back. Diana

Geta leads you through her process with such skill that I believe even the most inexperienced quilter could produce a project that will gather admiration from all of their friends. She not only has an artist's eye for creating intricate and beautiful designs, but a detail oriented mind that results in clear and consisely written tutorials. You can't go wrong with this book and the included CD with full sized pattern printouts is icing on the cake!

I am always buying quilting books, and keep looking for something new. I have seen Shadow Trapunto done, but never like this. The instructions in this book are so detailed. She really carries you through the process bit by bit, gives a great understanding of the technique as well as lots of helpful hints. Most of the quilting designs are also easy to carry over to FMQ. The pictures are just stunning, I can't decide which I want to make first!

This book is awesome! I fell in love with the technique. The projects are impressive and complicated-looking, but Geta makes all seem doable.

I am new to machine quilting but the easy to follow instructions make me want to give it a try.

Thanks to Geta for writing such an innovative and inspirational book!
